       With AIDS, you had to work pretty hard to be infected; walking into a restaurant and breathing was not enough. So when people died of AIDS, they reported “died of complications from AIDS,” and everyone just thought, tsk tsk. If COVID deaths were reported as “died of complications from COVID-19,” all holy hell would break loose. Gotta keep the economy going, y’know? #covid

       @lauren The entire system is tilted in favour of small states; add in gerrymandered House districts, and we barely have a democracy. Having said that, nearly half the nation voted for a fascist ignoramus in 2020. More than half elected Nixon, Reagan (twice), G.W. Bush (twice), and Trump in 2016. So the problem is not ONLY structural; the essential problem is that ±50% of the American public is deeply conservative—to put it politely.

       @brinnbelyea @mekkaokereke @carnage4life Some of us boomers have been on the right side (usually the losing side) of every issue you can name. I have not owned a car since 2018, and the only car I have owned since 2004 was a Nissan Leaf. OTOH, most of my students drive or are driven to school in big SUVs. It's not about age.

       We progressives need to keep pushing politicians like Biden, but we also need to recognize that he represents the majority view. We are a minority. So let's keep pushing, but let's avoid the self-defeating trap of refusing to vote for folks like Biden, or making personal attacks on Biden, or opting for quixotic third-party "protest votes" where those votes are effectively votes for Republicans who are actual fascists and who, unlike Biden, are not "pushable" at all by progressives. #politics
