@seldo @trochee The boundary probing stuff makes sense to me (both why a user interested in this tech would try it, and the result). I’m not sure I understand why love entered the chat and didn’t leave. I don’t think you have to think the thing is sentient to find that unsettling.

I just noticed that AutoSave in Word now requires enabling OneDrive. This is really frustrating! I don't need or want this document to reside in their cloud storage -- it's got a perfectly sensible place to live on a shared drive that is backed up at very short intervals by my organization's IT. Really disappointed in Microsoft right now.

@futurebird I would love to hear more about where you teach. I’m a board member at a small private school that is similar in this way and am very curious about peer institutions. (I agree with you about the importance of having strong math teachers in the early grades, BTW.)

@futurebird @whknott When I was dipping my toe into the water of a stats degree, I came to understand that there's the way that it's taught to people in other disciplines -- which maps well onto the "lesser math" reputation -- and the way that it's taught in stats degree programs -- which leans heavily not just on intro calculus but also Real Analysis (which, coming to the field late, I did not have). The gap here is vast and I think is part of the reason that statistics as a field has not been successful in guild behaviors like naming constructs or policing who can practice it.

@futurebird I’ve seen this kind of thing in action before — sometimes, just nonverbally reminding someone they’re being observed is enough to get them to act right. It’s a nice little hack.

@futurebird @Jay @baldur that’s so interesting to me as a sometime peer reviewer of journal articles. I read everything with care and never give feedback like “this was pointless and meandering.” The goal is always to make the work good enough to publish rather than tell them not to publish it. I guess I have *received* feedback like that once or twice but it just seemed mean spirited and weird so I ignored it and the work got published elsewhere.

@thatandromeda @futurebird the scientists almost certainly deserve it, I mean, after naming a gene "sonic hedgehog" I'm surprised nobody's named some poor species "navicularis navisimilis" or the like

@futurebird what strikes me is that it is really very unpleasant to live life as such a fragile person.

@futurebird how is it we don’t notice the alien minds among us? That’s the Fourmi paradox

@futurebird Huh! I also find a good back and forth fulfilling, but I think it's more exciting when I'm interestingly wrong.
