@SuperDicq @cnx @zaire The fact you need to even explain this take is baffling.

@zaire @cnx @SuperDicq So it's all about this then, just coping; not ethics nor politics, just a manifestation of an unmet need or a fixation on doing something that is just far out of your reach.Consider doing something productive instead of online virtue signaling, because yes, so far everyone here thinks that's all you're achieving here, if you expected something else then congratulations, you've failed to convince anyone.

@prettygood @kirby @Hyperhidrosis @Pi_rat You can get paid to create free software, with which is technically and practically very difficult to harm people with.

@lxo @lexinova The same reasons I consider other projects such as Jellyfin proprietary; they're using the wrong tools and wrong means to do the job, with the bonus of only documenting how to deploy the program on top of Docker, which is absolutely proprietary, plus the iOS and Android builds which can't be free. Also the fact they host the source tree on a Gitlab instance rather than a regular git-dscm server which requires no javascript to browse, or directly on GNU Savannah like the vast majority of GNU project is unusual and misguided.

@taylan Honestly the only reason I'd consider a Tesla a reasonable choice as a personal car is if I could write zeroes to the whole filesystem and make any computer unoperable, that or if I can physically remove everything that has a processor in it.Very glad and grateful I don't have to deal with the shitfest that is new proprietary cars.

@dagda Ever since I started putting some considerable effort into improving my diet and physical shape I haven't been sick, and I also take winter very seriously, I always wear proper clothing, many people neglect both of these things and hence why everyone around me seems sick to some degree.

@Pi_rat Governments fund plenty of proprietary software with no source code available, at all, and all of it to abuse regular people or manipulate them.

@Pi_rat No, it's just as bad if not worse, specially in Europe. In the US proprietary software is mostly funded and developed by big tech, which have full blessing and legal rights to engage in business with the general public and manipulate and abuse them as much as they want. In Europe not only this is also true, but the government directly funds both proprietary and free software with money and labor that was stolen from working people through taxation.

"Fascism" is an historically legitimate term turned into a buzzword by an assorted minority composed largely of an ignorant and uncultured liberal crowd that has zero understanding of history, social science and politics of the past century. This reality exposes many people do not understand nor wish to understand their political adversary, and that's about the first step to fail this struggle, some would say "public education" failed them, but that's precisely what "public education" would do to people.

And what is #fascism, truly?Mussolini himself famously said, "Our Myth is the Nation. Our Myth is the Greatness of the Nation." Fascism looks to sweep people into a frenzy. Fascism exalts a leader as a messiah in a way that intentionally mirrors religious experiences. The State intends to replace traditional religion with secular civic religion. The State is the religion. To do this, the State creates a series of myths that unify the fascist elites, and the people over which they rule. Most famously these myths have been rooted in antisemitism and racism, but they don't always have to be. This civic religion, with its myths and its vision become the driving force of existence for the people. It diminishes or entirely destroys the role of actual supernatural-based religious principles. To help create this civic religion, fascists emphasize the use of aesthetics, including symbols, architecture and design. This is to elicit an intense emotional response in the same way that religious institutions often have. All mass movements have their own symbols. But fascism places an obsessive emphasis on visually distinct things and events, such as marches, ceremonies and meetings, and symbology. The idea is to build a mystique that fully envelops participants, creating not just a political movement, but a spiritual movement. The State is the religion.

People whose entire political activism revolves selective consumption; you need to find something more constructive and useful to do, otherwise you'll just live eternally frustrated and unproductive lives.

@nulflox > when someone steals itNo such thing as "digital theft". That out of the way. If you release source code under a license with strong copyleft such as GPLv3+, you can proxy license enforcement to third parties that might have the time and resources for enforcement, the FSF or the SFC recommend using GPL licenses precisely because it doesn't let enforcement up to one single copyright holder but many people or organizations, even users can enforce the license. If anything, being unable or unwilling to properly enforce the license is one more reason to pick GPLv3+ or similar as it makes enforcement to other people not just easier but possible.

@nulflox No, my explanation does answer your question. As I've explained in my first comment the developer doesn't need to take any action to guarantee enforcement, enforcement can be taken upon by anyone. In contrast not licensing the source code at all makes it absolutely proprietary, as in many countries a lack of copying terms often means that all rights are reserved.

@nulflox Most of those licenses have no valid grounds in a civil court and they would be dismissed by most judges, even if you tried to enforce it. Essentially using a joke/shitpost license is equal to not licensing at all, but with extra steps. If you're not going to pick a proper license out of laziness, specially a copyleft, you might as well not publish the work at all, as it takes far more effort to release the code than to license it.> That would make it absolutely free. No, a lack of license makes the work all rights reserved due to things like the Berne Convention, as Suiseiseki explained earlier. If you want a project to be free you need to use a free license.

Over the last nine months or so I've been steadily wasting less time staring at screens and doing useless activities, and it's made wonders on my overall health, who would've thought redirecting time away from wasteful activities and into self-growth and useful activities made your life better. However, every now and then I still hop into this place to check the overall landscape, and if anything, this positive shift in my personal life has reinforced my perspective that the vast majority of "issues" people complains throughout social media are most of the time nothingburgers or irrelevant issues that don't really have any material impact in your daily life. And by these issues I mean stuff like "cyberbullying", "internet drama", "social media toxicity" , etc. None of these are a real thing, and if you're convinced they can be you need to reconsider the kind of parasocial relationship you have with all this social media slop, regardless if it's free or proprietary. If you're interested in some advice regarding how to self-improve your routine and daily habits, one mild inspiration I had were a few rants discussing topics such as temptation, boredom and self-awareness from Luke Smith, but it's ultimately up to you to find a way, other people can do as much as inspire you if anything.

@7666 I am fond of your pomf service as I've used it a few times to share knowledge, it'd be unfortunate but unsurprising if you feel the need to shut it down due to the current affairs. I was going to suggest that maybe you could re-route it through I2P or Tor instead, but given you can directly exchange data from peer to peer through those networks it makes little sense to host a file sharing server over darknet.
