@mrjunge you can't push your code to someone else's repoYou make a pull request after pushing your branch to your own repo in a place where they can pull from it. Github et al has this workflow integrated into their website

Each merge in git has multiple parents (usually two but it can be more, and every non merge has 1 parent)Each commit is identified by a hash of its contents including its parents and, so, forms a directed graph (graph where the edges have a direction) with no loopsWhen you pull (which is just a fetch + merge, basically) git can see the places where it grafts on to your graph
