Suppose for a moment that a large bank that I do business with is now dead to me.I prefer credit unions and use a credit union for a LOT of stuff, but in today's financial world, sometimes you need a large bank with 24/7 support lines and lots of connections, etc. What bank should I look into? #askfedi #finance #bank

We're losing computing history at an incredible rate, but there are people doing just amazing work out there collecting not only information about the technologies, but also the people and processes that brought them to be. If you're interested in that kind of thing but not sure where to start, let me recommend some sites that have some great stories (in no particular order):https://folklore.org/0-index.htmlhttps://multicians.org/http://www.tuhs.org/There are others, of course! #ComputerHistory

Rules of the game: - Grab the nearest book.- Turn to page 42- Find the 2nd sentence- Post the sentence in a toot with the hashtag & write the rules as a comment to it- Don't look for your favorite, coolest or wittiest book. Go for the closest.

I'm using the #Tusky #Mastodon client, and when I load my instance, I get the little pooped mastodon with "An error occurred" for the home timeline. Notifications, the local timeline, and direct messages all load fine, just not the home timeline. Before I file a ticket, does anyone know why this is happening, and whether it might be server- or client-side? "An error occurred" is not a lot to go on.

I just tried to install #ReactOS on a couple of random old laptops I had lying around and failed. Now I'm on to #NetBSD just so I can have a success.

OK, well, #NetBSD didn't boot (a different image probably would have), but #HaikuOS booted and installed, so I call that a victory.

I just got bit by #Emacs defaulting to lexical-binding: nil.I was editing some elisp that worked fine in ielm, and it got complicated enough that I decided I wanted a file. I plopped it into an empty .el file, made some small changes, re-evaluated, and all of the sudden stuff that used to work was broken. After a few moments in the debugger I said, "this feels like a dynamic scoping problem", was looking at the buffer, and noticed the little orange "/d".WHY?

OK #Emacs people, time to #AskFedi about an #elisp API thing:I'm running async external processes, and I want to trigger callbacks when they finish (successful or otherwise). I'm currently using process sentinels, but ... this interface is terrible! The process result is a string that _isn't even well-defined?_ Surely there has to be a better way! What is that better way? (I see that eshell uses those same strings, so I'm not hopeful...)

@hajovonta this is neither true nor helpful. Assume that I actually know A LOT about processes, operating systems, programming, and even lisp development.

In the Spring of 2025, I taught a course about interactive programming environments to a small group of students. For various reasons, I have to take down the official web page for that site, which includes slides that may be of interest to people who care about these things. I have therefore chosen to publish those slides on Lost Bits under a Creative Commons License.https://lostbits.net/blog/interactive-programming-environments.htmlIf you are interested in such things, check it out!#lisp #smalltalk #squeak #forth #emacs
