Our friend took a BMW E28 from the junkyard and turned it into a race car for under $500 through lots of sweat equity. He's been racing it in various 24 Hours of Lemons races (a play on the Le Mans). Last weekend, my husband was one of the 4 drivers and while they were nowhere near fast, they did finish with both the car & the drivers in one piece, which is an accomplishment in and of itself.
