@paradroyd Not sure if they still do this, but I tried cancelling a few times before, and each time they automatically offered something like 50% off if I stayed on. I relented, but suspect I’ll eventually be moving back to my own self-hosted solution in the future.

I found that some ANSI art I had commissioned for my dialup #BBS back in 1997 is still archived online [1].I still have a full backup of the entire state of the BBS somewhere. Forever tempted to put something like this back online someday. Though such a project would have to be driven by more than just nostalgia.[1]: https://16colo.rs/pack/flip-31/CA-ACR1.FLP#bbsing #othernetworks #retrocomputing

Started using references/citations in my #zettelkasten markdown notes instead of inline links.Small change that makes a big impact with better readability and less interruption of the flow.#neovim

Something I really appreciate about #Flickr is that your images continue to get consistent views and interaction long after you post them, rather than dropping out of view of a timeline or algorithm. I have photos posted years ago that get dozens or hundreds of views a day.Flickr has search capability specialized for #photography, and people use it to search for examples of work done with specific cameras, lenses, or film types which is another way your photos continuously generate attention.

Every once in a while the right person favorites one of your photos, or somebody finds your photo and adds it to a curated group that focuses on some specific color or mood or whatever, and suddenly you get a new surge of traffic and people browsing your entire portfolio from something you posted 8 years ago.

I've been trying to use #DuckDuckGo for months now as my default search engine.I'm finding that most searches for technical things are worthless, & almost always must be repeated on Google. The engine seems to ignore or discard terms that are important to the query (i.e. technical details), while boosting results for words that are more popular (and thus more ambiguous).Quoting to get a verbatim match rarely helps much, because the Bing-sourced data is simply missing so much information.

On the upside, the results do seem to be less clogged with SEO'd out, fully-AI-generated spam sites, as often show up at the top of results on Google (have you tried Googling anything healthcare-related lately? Because holy heck). It is still a cleaner experience when you want to find something simple and non-technical.

The move here might be to make an adjustment to the habit of relying on search engines, and use the internal search on a handful of curated individual sites instead. Also to continue ramping up my efforts of building my own local #SecondBrain. Referring back to the personal interpretation of information is often more useful than the source information itself.
