@fribbledom have been reading criticisms of JSON and YAML lately and I wonder if the reason nobody does this is that all the parseable formats suck and people would rather have a non-assed non-solution than any of the half-assed ones

But in general "streaming" has been seen as OK because you don't get to keep a copy of what you stream so potentially whoever's sending out the stream can repeatedly monetize it through ads. These post-flash days, it's much more possible to save copies of stuff but the UI generally isn't available, you need a Firefox plugin or a Python script or some shit. And where would you keep it on your mobile phone even if you did download it?....

But you know... these days a decent copy of a whole pop song doesn't take much more storage than a single good photograph. Masto's decentralized, not an easy target for takedowns, who wants to waste a lawyer on randoServerWithThreeUsers dot social?Could there be a world where we actually share music again?

What if there was a bot where you could notify it of a toot with a link to a youtube song, and it would reply with a toot containing the audio from that youtube song *embedded in the toot*?I bet you could write that bot today without too much trouble.

Apparently the latest mastodon has better audio upload.Sharing audio outside the context of Youtube videos has been taboo on the internet for so long, partly because it used to be a heavy thing to host and partly because in the post-Napster era it was aggressively attacked by copyright lawyers. You could share all the copyrighted photos you wanted and nobody would care, but one pop song would get you lawyered to death.
