@Cuber Nah, you can't tolerate crap like that. You can only do something "ironically" for so long before it's no longer fake, but just who you are.

I just wrote my first weekly meal plan and I'm already tired of planning so far in advance.

@tek Oh, there's a few leftover days, fear not :)And we already had a swap because I didn't realize until too late that we were out of charcoal for the smoker, so we mixed things up to Sunday Pot Roast instead of Monday Pot Roast. That said, I made a beef wellington once for Christmas, and likely will never again after mincing 2lbs of mushrooms by hand with a knife :p

@tek I'd be wary of a single ethics course. My degree had an ethics course requirement, but it was kind of a fluff course; talk a bit about different ethical models, go into some real life major ethical breaches, but not much in real take-aways or nuance that I recall.

@tek I think those were the cases we had in ours as well. I wish we went over more nuanced ethical issues than "if your product can kill people but it shouldn't, make sure it doesn't". It's not really debatable that Therac-25 was an absolute screw up, but ethics around data collection and selling customer data is.

@tek I always knew awk would be a good thing to learn. The real question is do they mean nawk, gawk, mawk, or some other niche flavor?

@tek So annoyed my Kobo's Pocket integration doesn't work with Firefox-auth Pocket accounts. It's pushing me towards... more extreme measures. If I find the time for it.

@tek I think they stopped doing real updates on the H2O 2nd Edition, and it's stuck on an old login prompt that doesn't take Firefox logins.

@tek oooh... maybe. I'd still only use Pocket for the Kobo as a Bad RSS Feed :tm:, so if I can get my RSS feeds hooked in that'd be preferable :)

@tek Literally beating hackers with a keyboard, keycaps flying in all directions. The PS/2 cable later used as a garrote.

I got pretty worried about day 12 this year because my coworkers were saying how impossible it was, but it's basically a 1D nonogram which if you're familiar with the rules, isn't too hard to code for once you sit down and write it out a bit.

@tek Interesting, the only changes I needed between part 1 and part 2 were swapping to 64 bit integers for the results and memoizing the "searches". Finishes in about a minute without much optimiziation. It's not a normal concern, but AoC really pushes for solutions that don't use short lived memory allocations so my recursion's parameters were two integers related to the indices of my nonogram's line and clue properties.

@tek That's so funny. My p1 took 1s to run or so, but p2 takes ~30s on power and 60s off power to run on the same computer. My relevant and heavily commented code if you want to laugh at my eiffel code that I picked up about 16 days ago https://github.com/epurcell3/aoc2023/blob/main/day12/nonogram.e

@tek There's no such thing as early exit in eiffel :blobfoxlaughsweat:I think we're doing something similar for part 1, overall, but I'm making almost no heap allocations after I create my "nonogram" object (ignore the memoization for this) whereas you and many of my coworkers were doing what's mathematically/theoretically correct but not computationally/physically correct in regards to memory management.

@tek One of the things I like about our winter is the need to layer up a bit means I can wear a wool vest to the office when I go in (and I have an appropriate solid colored shirt to go with it).

@tek My wife's a big fan of it, so I've got a new vest pattern and I'll be looking for some better spring/summer fabrics because heavy wool isn't really "don't sweat too bad" friendly.Just need to find time to get fabric and sew.

@tek It's such a meaningless thing to try to codify unless the "robot" is at least near "generally intelligent" vs the current state of "does the same task repeatedly". Current robots out in the world are about as intelligent as the high voltage cables that bring power to our homes.Fortunately, it also basically throws out that only neural networks are part of the decision making.

Alright, what're folk's preferred VPS hosts these days? Don't need too much (maybe 8 GB RAM?), needs to support a smallish Postgres database, and bonus points for an Atlanta datacenter or centered in Atlanta.#AskFedi #SelfHosting #SelfHost
