My neighborhood email list coordinated putting stuffed animals, specifically, stuffed bears, in our windows, so that people on a walk can go on a bear hunt.

ok, just how did I mess up this repo?but I think it's back to normal again, after dealing wtih git submodules, which don't make any sense to me other than they are weird unearthly hyperlinks embedded in the filesystem.also, perhaps related, perhaps unreated, I am using VS Code on my Mac for writing. and it's pretty nice! I could learn to not use vim for everything.

If you have a need to write a man page, but don't particularly want to learn nroff, this very simple guide and template is helpful:https://eddieantonio.ca/blog/2015/12/18/authoring-manpages-in-markdown-with-pandoc/In short you write in markdown with a few special bits, and then translate the markdown to man pages with pandoc. One thing about writing man pages for software that you wrote is that you can include documentation for features you haven't yet implemented yet, properly marked as such, to remind you of your intent.

"You can’t commit to master because it is a protected branch."OK then, this is one way to make sure I abide by my own workflow ideas.

Two dams broke upstream of Midland, Michigan after heavy rains. Flooding is forecast to be at record levels. Listening to the scanner, because apparently that's what I do when this sort of thing happens. Water rescues underway, bridges out, roads closed, etc. One of the dams that failed had been cited for years by regulators for safety issues, per Bridge Magazine.https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-environment-watch/mid-michigan-dam-failed-was-cited-years-safety-violationsScanner: Midland County public safetyhttps://www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/25995

@kemonine I would do a station wagon full of mag tapes first before sending that much data down a slow line.Maybe send directory listings and checksums over the wires. But ship a few backup drives.

I guess I'm blogging again. If you are currently blogging too, let me know and I'll add you to my blogroll.https://vielmetti.typepad.com/logbook/2020/06/logbook-june-2020-blogroll.htmlso oldschool, but when blogging starts to look easy and relaxing compared to mainstream social media, there I guess I have to go.

@artlogic I've got two piles of blog-stuff. I bought a Typepad account years ago, and keep up appearances there, because the mean time from hitting "post" to seeing a post live is very small, and I like that. I also have some dead blogs that have too many posts there, and are hard to port anywhere else.I also have a pile of blog-stuff under Hugo, which is pretty close to Jekyll in spirit I guess. This sitehttps://emv-commonplace.netlify.comhas a bunch of stuff but not in blog-order, just categories.

@artlogic I learned at one job how to write 500 words of copy that was properly punctuated, properly spelled, on topic and readable, all on a deadline, every date. I miss that discipline, though not that industry. The other thing I love about blogs when the publishing system is just right is how quickly you can get a page on the Internet that looks good and that has some appropriate level of gravitas to the task at hand.

Back in 2016 I submitted a paper to the Prometheus user conference ("Promcon") about monitoring the health of the power grid with that tool. It was accepted but I didn't have the resources then to travel.Fast forward 4 years and I finally put in place the tooling I thought I might have wanted to have then, monitoring every zip code in the DTE service area every few minutes and feeding the data into Grafana.Storms tonight, I might get data, or the tracker system might lose power.

@kemonine yeah, we're in good shape for shelter, and I have my ham radio tuned to the local weather spotter channel so I won't be surprised

@mwlucas I'm collecting DTE outage data every 10 minutes, here's what the outage and recovery graph looks like.Over all: 72 hours where there were greater than 10K outages, peak at over 160K out.Left side aggregate shows from onset to recovery, right side detail is by zip code. Worst recovery times are 48236 and 48224 - Grosse Pointe and east side Detroit.Data gathered with Prometheus and Grafana and a few tiny shell scripts that scrape details from DTE.

I'm going through very old boxes of records in the attic, many of which include records that need to be shredded. In the process, unearthing old photos, postcards from far-away places, other pleasantries. But mostly by weight this is an accumulated backlog of shreddable stuff.I will feel better when it's been properly and thoroughly destroyed.Anyone have good recommendations for a home shredder?

@craigmaloney Non-disparagement clauses are a red flag for me. If you can't negotiate a mutual admiration clause, then don't agree to terms.
