I don't think I'll ever not be salty about reddit/twitter/Facebook/etc killing off internet forums and the accessibility of esoteric knowledge and expertise that they provided. There was a period of time when online knowledge had substance and staying power. Where Good information was collected, curated, indexed, and preserved. When enthusiasts could ask and answer questions for other enthusiasts without wading through garbage opinions and non-information only to have it all fade into long lost and forgotten history in a day or two never to be found again.

Yo infosec folks:Does anyone know if there are any good Windows remote desktop connection managers out there which adequately protect stored credentials to prevent decryption or access to the stored server connections in the event of a stolen device? Assume bitlocker encryption is bypassed. I've heard some less than reassuring things about mremoteng and rdcman in this regard, and I know the microsoft provided one is chock full of vulnerabilities. I'm looking for a solution that won't get me crucified if I condone use by remote sysadmins.

Something like a month ago, I told my team they shouldn't be logging in as a local administrator on their work laptops. Signing in with a standard user account and then just elevating processes that needed elevation was deemed "too much hassle" though and nobody else on the team was willing to do it. I didn't have the authority to force the issue. This week we're finishing up an internal pentest and security audit, and among the findings, they got into *everything*, and did it by compromising admin user accounts on everyone's laptops on my team, except mine... I'm eagerly awaiting the full report for an I-told-you-so.

@thegibson It never does affect the fat cats. They always get their golden parachutes, while everyone else, from the employees and members, to the taxpayers, subsidize their losses.Since around the turn of the century, the USA has been really going for bust on allowing companies and banks to take risky bets, and then letting them off the hook when they inevitably fail.Externalizing costs has always been a core feature of western capitalism, but it's basically been a free-for-all ever since reaganomics reached its final form and the post-9/11 bailouts proved once and for all that *not* taking huge risks with other people's money was a business liability in a landscape where all the other businesses that did do it would get bailed out when they fail. Instead of jail time, the executives just get a slap on the wrist and cash out.

I have not been seeing nearly enough discussion about what is poised to be one of the most dangerous bills to move through congress this decade. For those not in the know, Senate Bill 686 The RESTRICT Act in its current form grants sweeping authority for the U.S. government to prosecute, fine, and imprison any person whom--among *many* other things--uses a VPN to access any "app" operated by a "foreign adversary" of the U.S.The wording of the bill is so broad and vague that it can criminalize a wide range of technologies, and potentially even ensnaring U.S. citizens for conspiracy simply on the basis that they use a VPN that the US gov. can't snoop on and see what they're doing with it.Let that sink in--you could face a minimum of 20 years in prison and from $250,000 up to $1,000,000 in fines, just for protecting your online privacy with a VPN, and your only recourse is to appeal in the D.C. circuit court. The bill's sponsors pinky promise it won't be used for that, and it's only meant to catch foreign actors engaged in subterfuge etc, but the language to back that claim just isn't there. The anti-circumvention penalties and restrictions essentially put at risk anyone whom engages in any activity using these technologies due to the fact that if the technology is working, then the government can't see what you're using it for, and therefore simply using it could be used as the basis for charges of conspiracy to circumvent. It is abundantly clear that if this passes, it can and will eventually be used to target anyone engaging in activities the government or its corporate sponsors don't like. This isn't a slippery slope. It's a lubed up vertical waterslide straight to weaponizing the acting regime's list of potential "threats" against citizens engaging in protected speech. Don't just write your representatives. Call them. Demand that they oppose this bill, and vow to actively campaign for their opponents if they won't.If this passes, then ultimately no speech is protected in the U.S. It is 100% unconstitutional, but do you really trust our current courts stacked with political operatives to shoot it down?Read the bill and see related info here: https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/686Go here to find your representatives and how to contact them about it: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/118/s686/commentHere's more reading on the bill and how it affects us:https://reason.com/2023/03/29/could-the-restrict-act-criminalize-the-use-of-vpns/https://www.vice.com/en/article/4a3ddb/restrict-act-insanely-broad-ban-tiktok-vpnshttps://www.dailydot.com/debug/restrict-act-tiktok-jail-time-vpn/https://linustechtips.com/topic/1497307-the-restrict-act-supposedly-to-ban-tik-tok-will-probably-not-put-you-in-jail-for-using-a-vpn-it-mentions-even-very-futuristic-technologies/🖐️🎤

@Gojiro "I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops."--Stephen Jay GouldToday's society is especially hostile toward the neurodivergent, and the disabled. I have no doubt that were they born this century, Einstein, Hawking, and basically all of the great thinkers and innovators of the past centuries whom we know for their outstanding contributions to society, would have lived and died in poverty, denied any opportunity to realize their potential. This is one of the greatest tragedies of our time.

This one cuts deep:The modern condition is mostly trying to do things on your own that people have historically achieved with a large support network and wondering why you're tired all the time.
