I wonder if Rio Tinto is paying to find the little radioactive capsule lost in Western Australia? https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-01-28/radioactive-capsule-search-perth-to-pilbara-/101902914

I wonder if emphasising how 'rare' the loss of this capsule is considered to be, is an attempt to remove the company from responsibility for the safe handling of this dangerous substance?I wonder if any of us knew that such things were transported around our city and state with such little care and potentially such dire results?

@adam Totally agree. A working sewing machine, or at least a hand sewing kit and some sharp scissors are as important as a drill or secateurs

@dnc You have my sympathies. I lost an entire beetroot crop in one night once. Infuriating!

One of the pleasures of life is giving away stuff we have in surplus. This week we have filled three baskets of limes which have gone to the neighbourhood. A plie of landscaping rocks was taken by someone who wants to build a water feature. #gardening

The paperbark or melaleuca is a favourite street tree around here. It has small white bottlebrush type flowers but they appear thickly over the tree, and ate loved by bees and tiny birds. 🦘#bloomscrolling

There is a wooden teepee at the play centre but it is often too hot to play in.Today I planted a hakea laurina, a rhodencarpus and three westringias around it. They are in green tents to make it obvious to tiny children that they can't walk there. In a couple of years we hope it will be more shady here.#volunteer #gardening

Challenge from the play centre where I volunteer in the garden: a 30cm wide space next to a limestone bordered sandpit, and a cyclone wire fence. Really terrible Perth sandy 'soil', no water. FACES EAST.Educators need it to be child safe, child proof, and cheap.I am thinking of Australian native grasses of some kind.Any ideas? #gardening #volunteer

The President and all seven Commissioners of the Australian Human Rights Commission are united in our demand for immediate reform over the ongoing crisis of Aboriginal deaths in custody. There have been 12 Aboriginal deaths in custody across the country since the start of 2025. Recent deaths in the Northern Territory push the national total to almost 600 deaths since the 1991 Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (RCIADIC). In recent years, this includes increased numbers of men, women, and children dying in custody. Social Justice Commissioner Katie Kiss: “My heart goes out to affected families and communities. I stand in complete solidarity with those in mourning. “Our governments need to respond genuinely to the commitments they have undertaken to meet Closing the Gap targets. There is an urgent need to invest in prevention to stop people from entering the justice system in the first place. “Our people are dying in a system that has failed them from the beginning. The need for transformational reform is undeniable. During our recent visit to the Territory, Commission President Hugh de Kretser and I heard repeatedly that a law and order disaster was unfolding for Aboriginal people, and this concern has been raised consistently across the country. “Without an evidence and human rights-based approach to justice and corrections, the massive over-representation of our peoples in custody - and dying in custody - will remain a national shame. Enough is enough.” #auspol #DeathsInCustody #humanRights https://humanrights.gov.au/about/news/we-must-end-national-shame-aboriginal-deaths-custody
