Hot Take: Other news organizations should strongly consider whether NPR's exit from #birdsite and the behavior leading up to it means that only public spirited, journalistic response is to suspend operations as well. https://www.npr.org/2023/04/12/1169269161/npr-leaves-twitter-government-funded-media-label #Solidarity #Journalism

@realcaseyrollins Why is the journalism-hostile behavior of a platform not a good reason for journalism organizations to bail?

@realcaseyrollins Because it's not true. And the latest in a line of explicitly hostile behavior towards news organizations. Also, as I've pointed out before news organizations derive minimal ROI from their activity on Twitter. Whereas e.g. Facebook drives back a lot of traffic.

@realcaseyrollins @NecroBelch @edgeoforever Working on a detailed reply. But you are correct, that NPR is only acting now that their ox has been gored. The "state funded" was false and not apologized for. The "government funded" is misleading at best and dishonest. About 13% of local public radio station revenue comes from state or federal governmental units. For NPR itself the number is even smaller.

@realcaseyrollins @NecroBelch @edgeoforever True of most any person or organization with a large fan base.

@realcaseyrollins @NecroBelch @edgeoforever By that measure a vast swath of news organizations would need the label due to various schemes that funnel real and tax expenditures to them. Twitter under Musk is capriciously targeting news organizations for punitive behavior.First example? Nope. But this is a good time for others to think strongly about whether participating (with little ROI) in that platform is a worthwhile from a moral perspective.

@realcaseyrollins @NecroBelch @edgeoforever I'm saying that there's no rhyme or reason to it at all. Just Elon's fits of pique. And with his attitude towards the press as a civic institution, it's (past) time for organizations to look at the time, effort and promotion they put into that is (a) appropriate and (b) worth it.
