@sorceressofmathematics There is a decidedly human form, well, humans, in all of their diversity. That's why attempts at making us something more, like transhumanism will always read to me like attempts at making us inhuman, something I can't get behind. We're humans, for better or for worse.

@killyourfm @jan I wanted to run something like Pleroma, but I just can't bring myself to actually go through the deployment process.

@wongmjane And then defederating with everyone and making a bunch of proprietary extensions to it like Slack did with IRC and like Whatsapp did with XMPP.

@acidghost Most people don't care about that. Their main goals are engagement and a good UX. Hell, most people don't care about federation. It's okay for you to care about these things, but it's a mistake to project your feelings unto others. You'll just be disappointed and jaded all the time.

@killyourfm I'm at my best when I'm inspired. It doesn't come naturally to just sit down and write a story or a poem.Creativity has to be based on and invoked by something. I usually find inspiration in the people, events and places around me.

Is there a way to emulate Gnome's dynamic workspaces on MacOS?I don't understand why anyone would want static workspaces, when you can just let the environment manage them for you.#askfedi #workspaces #macos #gnome #linux #unix

@killyourfm Music is the only constant in my life, through the good, the bad and the ugly. I can always count on music. You raise a very good point.

@dansup @pixelfed No, not a good idea. You just have to accept the risk of that and find an instance with a good track record.

@musl I'll use musl when most software I use doesn't depend on glibc extensions.

@hipsterelectron @lanodan @musl The fact of the matter, to me at least, is that I won't switch what definitely works for what might eventually work. Not a dig at musl at all, I'm just unwilling to make the effort. Plain and simple. I'm not a systems programmer and I don't pretend to be one. For the most part, I just expect the default configuration to work. My fiddling days are gone.

Looking back at the history of technological development of our species I'm fascinated by how wide the gap between the first rudimentary stone tools and the development of agriculture some 12k years ago. You have millennia of stagnation. It's wild to think people used to live the same way for thousands of years on end.If we take the best estimate for the emergence of behavioral modernity to be ~75k years ago then it took us ~63k years to develop agriculture.Absolutely mindblowing.

It would take us another 11+ thousand years to develop the steam engine, at the dawn of the first industrial revolution, after which technological progress explodes beyond belief. We're used to the concept of some groundbreaking technology emerging every few years or so. So much so that we've come to be unimpressed by it.These are our ancestors, homo sapiens, they lived, told stories, had children, got sick and died, just like we do. They were just as smart as us.So what gives?

What's funnier is that our nature didn't fundamentally change from the times we crudely painted the world as we knew it on cave walls. We still tell the same allegories, share the same experiences and have the same desire to connect with others like us.We're still, for better or for worse, quintessentially human. And I guess I can take some solace in that.

@ryan To say that what he's endured is criminal is an understatement. And to see him so lucid after all that is a joy. I hope he can now have even a semblance of peace. The world owes him an apology.

@darkwiiplayer @onepict You absolutely don't have to. I enjoy the craft and if my creations happen to be useful to someone that's a bonus in my book.I limit "useful" software to my professional work only. What I do in my free time, I do for myself, out of love for my craft. There is beauty in building something and watching it come alive from essentially nothing but your abstract thought.
