@interfluidity With the caveat that this isn't coming from a position of *general* scorn (I actually think ideal gun laws are closer to current US than current Australian) ...I can't think of a better way of outing yourself as carrying, than to be sticking these stickers on things 🙄 It's called "concealed" carry for a reason 🤣

Installed Haiku on my old ThinkPad X200, to start getting a feel for it prior to commencing a Haiku-based side project. Coming from Linux and FreeBSD, it has such an easy, consistent, GUI.

@interfluidity @maxbsawicky Yup. Small l-libertarian here: there should be no cost whatsoever to using any public institution. To tax people and *then* charge them is reprehensible, and disproportionately impacts the poorest members of society.

@MostlyHarmless But how would *that* help the companies that make the AIs?

A follow-up! It seems the company in question has a terribly bad reputation.https://www.yelp.com/biz/law-office-of-bryan-fagan-houston-4

I'm looking at de-Googling my phone experience, and am considering buying a decent point-and-shoot camera to cover that aspect of smartphone ownership.Anyone here into photography and can recommend a decent model, especially one that can handle low-light and motion somewhat gracefully? Last time I tried this I used a Canon SX610HS, and it was pretty woeful. I don't need 2025-flagship-smartphone levels of camera, just something I can use to ensure I have photos and videos of the family to look back on, when I'm in my dotage 🧓 #photography #cameras #degoogling

I value the ability to swap ports around on my Framework 13 so highly. I had thought it was a bit of a gimmick before buying one, but actually, it's a superpower and I can't imagine buying a new laptop without this feature now. #framework

Even just "I need this HDMI port on the other side of the laptop on this particular desk" isn't a situation you can normally do something about.

@interfluidity Interestingly, this works pretty well for extreme edge cases too.Consider the obvious historical edge cases: NAZI Germany or Imperial Japan. The outcome of the war - those countries becoming liberal democracies - was very much a thing that all concerned *should* consent to. And in fact, absent their lunatic leadership, almost all did.

Merry Christmas fedi-folks 😁 🎄 🦘 🥂 With all the dire things happening in tech right now it's important to remember what we *do* have ... a growing "smol Web" movement, new protocols like Gemini, minimalist tooling like HTMX, fast and efficient languages like Rust, Lisp, and C, and operating systems like Linux, FreeBSD, and Haiku that don't consume *so* much expensive RAM and storage. Here's to an exciting year in *good* tech in 2026 👋
