@mastodonusercount @Bam but this is just accounts, right? Not active ones necessarily? I saw another statistic showing mastodon is nearing 2m active users.

@lynn @lassielmr @zleap @DidiQ why should they learn all that in Scotland? I assure you they learned of the holocaust equally superficially, because it's all part of "world history" for them.

@lynn @lassielmr @zleap @DidiQ everything you learn at school is superficial by definition

@lynn @lassielmr @zleap @DidiQ it was about neither, but fine. School is designed to provide a very basic level of general knowledge that almost 100% of the population should be able to understand, and a small proportion would be interested in enough to go an learn more independently/at college. It can be nothing but superficial.

@lynn @lassielmr @zleap @DidiQ 12 years, during most of which children are way too young to understand historical nuance. I'm not an American, so I'll freely admit limited knowledge of the Civil War, but I find it hard to believe the North would go to this war because they cared that much about the slaves... Like all wars, it was about power. But I'm open to be convinced otherwise.

@lynn @lassielmr @zleap @DidiQ i think they are taught superficially, I thought I said that quite clearly.Like I said, I'm open to be convinced otherwise, but knowing the continued effictive segregation of black people in the North, I find it hard to believe that human rights was their main concern

@lynn @lassielmr @zleap @DidiQ I'm frankly not sure what you're talking about. American kids don't learn English at school.

@augieray I don't disagree, but I have to ask - what's the endgame here? Is the expectation that we'll mask forever? COVID is not going away, and vaccinations, incredible as they are, can't keep up. Can we ever win? And if not, what's the alternative to just resuming life and dealing with the consequences?

@pixplz I don't know if you wear glasses, but if you do, you probably know how difficult it is to mask with those. I was having constant headaches while I was regularly masking because of the fogging. I can definitely accept masking when there's heightened risk, but if it's always heightened, then I'll take my chances with long covid, same as I take my chances with cancer when I go out in the sun
