A poast I wanted to write for quite some time but I struggle to keep it short: Regarding all revolutions and usurpations of power, there is a thing I call the "escalation ladder" (see pic below). Basically, it is not in the interest of governments to use undue force against opposition because that would diminish its legitimacy. At the same time, tyrannical governments will use any force to stay in power. The result is a stepwise increase in repression, corresponding to opposition strength. Conversely, we can deduce our strength from how much the system oppresses us. Furthermore, oppression is a good thing, we want to be oppressed, but we also want to fight it. Even more so since our system prides itself in liberty, thus the toll it pays is especially high. 1/2
