Spotlight - CatppuccinOver the weekend, I discovered something for my theming demands. I was eagerly looking for a pastel/cozy look for my desktop. Catppuccin ticks so many boxes for me that I really want to share with you.https://blog.while-true-do.io/spotlight-catppuccin/#theme #linux #opensource #desktop

The discussion about RHEL and the way RedHat/IBM does Open Source seem pretty weird these days. There is a company that bought proprietary software and made it Open Source. The same company is THE major contributor across thousands of Open Source projects. Furthermore, this company is funding and sponsoring hundreds of projects.Yet, some people see this company as „the evil“ and stating that they harm FOSS.Is this reasonable?

Well, let’s start with the GPL. This is the most discussion worthy point. The GPL states in its FAQs:https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#ModifiedJustBinary——The whole point of the GPL is that all modified versions must be free software—which means, in particular, that the source code of the modified version is available to the users.——Since @centos Stream holds all the RHEL sources, we should investigate here. But it’s not easy.

Everything else, seems wildly hypocritical.@redhat is one of the major contributors for many open source projects.https://www.redhat.com/en/about/open-source-program-office/contributionsThe outcome for us users is: more free and well maintained software.Just let’s assume that companies like RedHat, IBM or even Microsoft stop contributing to the Linux Kernel. The impact would be unpredictable but not for the better, I think.

But what about projects like @rockylinux ?From my perspective they are undermining the idea of Open Source. Rocky states:——Rocky Linux is an open-source enterprise operating system designed to be 100% bug-for-bug compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux®.——Per definition, that does not allow us to contribute bugfixes or integrate features into Rocky. And this is a good thing? Is this what FOSS was about? Copycats and RipOffs?

Isn’t it the same with @almalinux ? I highly doubt. Instead of focusing on the „bad, evil RedHat“-idea, Alma has shown lots of motivation and involvement with the developer community.Projects like „ELevate“ origins in AlmaLinux and really helped the community.https://almalinux.org/elevate/The project seems way less about „hurting the evil RedHat“, but more about „helping the community to evolve“.

Let’s assume, you are publishing an Open Source software and somebody is coming around to provide a 1:1 copycat of your code with just a new name. A project were you aren’t allowed to contribute or fix bugs. They are even making money out of it.We blame companies for building on top of Open Source, but we blame others if we cannot build on top for free? So, is it really about FOSS or just about „I want it all, for free, now!!!“

I am not sure where this journey will end. I am eager to know. But standing in a corner and backseat blaming RedHat for being „the worst“ is just not right. Most of us wouldn’t be able to use Linux on the desktop without the massive work that went into the Linux and GNU ecosystem.

Linux - What about Red Hat and Open Source? With the latest changes at Red Hat another wave pushed through the world of Open Source. Finally, the dust has settled a bit. In this article, I want to take a look at these changes, discuss if Red Hat is evil and how we might continue from here.https://blog.while-true-do.io/linux-what-about-red-hat-and-open-source/#linux #redhat #centos #almalinux #rockylinux #opensource

During the #ansible community day, I was asked about my terminal.Well, my overall theme is coming from the awesome Catpuccin project. My prompt is made with Starship and the initial "fetch" is small tool, written in Go, mostly for myself. And the font is FiraMono Nerd Font. Here are the links to said projects:- https://github.com/catppuccin/catppuccin- https://starship.rs/- https://github.com/dschier-wtd/cutefetch- https://www.nerdfonts.com/font-downloads#bash #prompt #theme #looks #terminal #shell #linux #opensource #showcase

@itsfoss very honestly? My issue with itsfoss is not about being unreachable occasionally. It is the massive wall of adds. So much that some browsers reload your page multiple times before being able to read a mere 300 words article. And so much that I am almost seeing the adds for diapers, watches, adobe products and temu intimidating that I want to opt out of your page.7 adds in this article alone!

@thelinuxcast So you say:- some random person in the internet made a tutorial (maybe even for free)- the person assumes you have some knowledge, but you don’t or he wasn’t even aware that he missed a part- otherwise the author was neither harmful nor insulting - you get angry since the person thought high of your own knowledge- you need to share that you feel insulted and frustrated about thisGotcha.
