Elon Musk Caves to Pressure From India to Remove BBC Doc Critical of Modihttps://theintercept.com/2023/01/24/twitter-elon-musk-modi-india-bbc/Twitter and YouTube censored a report critical of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in coordination with the government of India. Officials called for the Big Tech companies to take action against a BBC documentary exploring Modi’s role in a genocidal 2002 massacre in the Indian state of Gujarat, which the officials deemed a “propaganda piece.”This act of censorship sets a worrying tone for Twitter, especially in light of its new management.“While Musk has been glad to stand up to suppression of speech against conservatives in the United States — something that he has described as nothing less than “a battle for the future of civilization” — he appears to be failing at the far graver challenge of standing up to the authoritarian demands of foreign governments. (Twitter’s communications effort is now helmed by Musk, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)“

@dgbassani This is pretty much what one would have predicted. Sweden went laissez faire, New Zealand went nearly full lockdown, and Canada tread the compromising middle road. All that political hand-wringing and existentialist drama was just that ... theatre. Seen from even a short distance the truth is obvious - that it was NEVER really complicated. Antisepsis, air quality (masking), isolation, quarantine, caution. The very basics of medical science.

@aljazeera In theory, this is why we have public broadcasters, like the CBC and BBC, so as not to be beholding to the tenuous patriotism of captialist media owners. The solution for social media is obvious, relatively inexpensive, and it is right here, right now! **The fediverse.** Public bodies and interests can not only *use* the infrastructure, but help to shape it and build it. What they can't do is control it ... no one can.

Rather than thinking of this as META (the mammoth corporation) invading the FEDIVERSE (the global non-profit), couldn’t we scale things down. A group of folks over there is interested in chatting with a group of folks over here. If the party gets out of hand, we can always call it off. From @stuxhttps://mstdn.social/users/stux/statuses/111586878344044075

@clive @bhawthorne I tried to repeat this experiment, also using DuckDuckGo, but my first 20 odd results were perfectly satisfactory. Most were from Wiki's or cooking websites and all gave a cooking temperature of between 325 and 400 degrees F with about 80% @ 350. My search was simple --cooking hazelnuts. I never searches phrases as fully formed questions since I figure that's just begging for an AI response. And I use Vivaldi (with Ad-Tracker) and the DuckDuckGo tracker.
