@ssfckdt my path to being an sde is paved with open-source repositories. I know it isn't always possible for people who have full, fulfilling lives to write code nights and weekends, but it's what worked for me -- publishing compilers, websites, servers, clis, you name it. Do you have a more specific discipline (systems, web, robotics, etc) that you're thinking of?

@futurebird you could go super science-y sounding, like “Solenopsis invicta”

@futurebird I’ve mostly taught adults, so this might not work for you, but I would try explaining that at the end of the lecture, you don’t need them to have working code, you need them to have a working understanding. They’re missing the important part of class, the learning, to focus on an unimportant part of class, producing a working program. If it’s not working, focus up and wait until we have a pause. To me, this sounds more like an etiquette question than a programming one.

@futurebird if I educe a meaning from a text, I am extracting a meaning that is definitely there. If I infer a meaning from a text, I am injecting a meaning that may or may not be present for other readers. I would be more embarrassed to discover I had educed than inferred an incorrect meaning from a text, because to me educe is the stronger claim.

@rysiek @delta once e2ee lands on fedi, would that be a reasonable contingency plan?

@arcanechat @rysiek thanks for this thorough answer. Sounds like if I want this someday from the fediverse, it’d be some combination of distributed identity, e2ee, and time, but for today just install delta chat and we’ll worry about all that later.

I’ve heard tell that “favorites” don’t actually do anything on mastodon, but since they’re federated, don’t they increase the speed at which a message is propagated across the fediverse? Or are they local-only?
