I still have work to do before I call it a day, but I'm very distracted by the idea of building an extensible #mastodon client

* I mentioned[1] that I miss Twitter's threaded tweets* I'm curious about applying different color themes to the site w/o admins having to add themes to an instance. Or giving the end user the ability to customize those themes* I have an idea I want to try for making it easier to read the branches of a reply tree* What if you could (live?) edit (or completely replace) components used to render parts of the client's view?[1]: https://toot.cafe/@dotproto/109282425427982764

I like how Mastodon instances have their own flavors and interests. I wish there was a way to have a combined feed of several instance timelines in order to see, experience, and engage with people on those instances (without having to find and follow a set of people in each instance)

Looks like there may be an imperfect solution that a Mastodon client could on.I decided to Google to see if maybe I just missed a feature in the webapp or if there were known workarounds. In the process, I found this feature request: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/6942From comments on that issue I found out that instances have public feeds. For example, https://toot.cafe/public. As you might expect, this also means that there are APIs you can hit to get this data. https://docs.joinmastodon.org/client/public/#timelines

If I do tackle a Mastodon client, I think I'd explore a "woven timeline" feature to combine a set of public feeds into a single timeline viewSpitballing, but a more robust version of this feature could lean on creating an account on secondary instance, redirecting[1] the secondary account your main one, and then using the API to fetch the local timeline from the secondary instance. Maybe this is even something that could be automated?[1]: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/#migration

@ondra yep, but I assume instance admins can disable the public feed or there may be other limitations that having a real local account would help with

I’m sad to say that yesterday was my last day on Chrome; I’m one of the 12k people hit by the layoffs announced todayThe last four years have been amazing. I had the pleasure to work with some truly great people and I gladly did what I could to make the lives of extension developers betterWhile I’m gutted, I’m also very excited to see the #webextension world evolve and, if possible, keep dong what I can to shape it 🤞

@misty I’m very sorry to hear that. I’ve been going through the same and deeply empathize with how much this moment sucks. I hope you’re able to quickly and easily find something that fits you even better!

I humbly suggest that we call posts on Threads “knots” and the act of posting “knotting”

@ondra @diekus that CWS change predated my time with Chrome, so I don't have full context. ATM I'm not terribly confident in my own recollection. Maybe @jschuh can share more?

Oh, I’ve been waiting for this as a precursor to being able to call JS APIs in Wasm code. Hopefully we’re not too far off now 🤞🏻 https://botsin.space/@intenttoship/110775311144425659

@jaffathecake > Now bigArrayBuffer is GC'd, since nothing within the scope is callable.Nit: It's now able to be GC'd, but we don't know *when* that will happen.Suggestion: "Now bigArrayBuffer can be GC'd, since nothing within the scope is callable."
