With Gargron now considering developing QTs, we should talk specifics:It may sound good to have an option to disable QTs, and I don't oppose it. However, I fear people don't understand that disabling it actually makes you more vulnerable, not less.QTs track everyone who is QTing you. This gives you situational awareness, and the ability to block bad actors. If you disable QTs, people may resort to screenshotting and linking instead, which you have no oversight of.

@Ask_aubry This is a big problem with Mastodon. An instance's "About" page is never really enough information to know how the server is managed, or if it's right for you.Internet moderation can go awry so fast.I expect the large, general purpose instances to have a lighter touch with moderation. It's so disappointing if they are just going to stifle any content they personally dislike.

@john @mike The concept of #hashtag #search is cool, but the main problem with it is most people around here don't even think to add them.Other platforms prompt the user to add hashtags, or at least make it a visible feature you wouldn't overlook.I think #Mastodon would have to do something like that in order to develop a hashtag culture like Tumblr has. Otherwise there will always be clamoring for text search.

@aom @john "No quote tweets" is not what makes Mastodon a real alternative to Twitter, for goodness sake. It's the fact that Mastodon is free software that forms a decentralized network. THAT is what's important.Refusing to implement common sense features that most people expect is willfully handing the reins of microblogging over to Elon.

It's so disingenuous when people (mostly Germans, in my experience) argue that #homophobia is a justification for flattening #Gaza.No country has EVER gone to war to fight homophobia.Iraq and Afghanistan have homophobia too, that didn't make the wars there "justified". There are #LGBT people in Gaza who are getting bombed and killed, along with their families. This war is not saving them.The Gay Rights Movement has NEVER advocated violence.
