Big tech and centralised platforms do well because they take care of all the logistical, financial and technical things that individuals don't want to do themselves. If you make doing those things really easy for anyone, half the problem is already solved for wide adoption of decentralised platforms.

I came across this quote in Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, and it immediately made me think of and confirm the merit of my efforts to rid myself of almost every online social account that I have, plus every non-utility app from my phone and computer (4.24):"'If you want to be happy', says Democritus, 'do little'. May it not be better to do what is necessary, what the reason of a naturally social being demands, and the way reason demands it is done? This brings the happiness of both right action and of little action. Most of what we say and do is unnecessary: remove the superfluity, and you will have more time and less bother. So in every case one should prompt oneself: 'Is this, or is it not, something necessary?' And the removal of the unnecessary should apply not only to actions but to thoughts also: then no redundant actions either will follow."

I have made horrible mistakes as a parent in the past by taking to heart this trite old line: "There's no instruction manual for #parenting".Well, actually, there are thousands! They can cover almost every possible aspect and situation you'll face. And if you're a parent, it's a moral imperative to find and read the manuals for you, and save yourself and your loved ones from untold amounts of very much avoidable suffering.

@joshroxs123_ Not personally but I work in a disability support NFP and one of my direct reports is a quadriplegic with a wonderfully caustic sense of humour.

@13sarahmurphy I suppose my rule of thumb has always been, "Is this a post where there's a chance that a meaningful number of people would have a problem with seeing it, if they did not explicitly ask to see it?" and if the answer is yes, then give it a CW.If in doubt, I would err *away* from putting a CW on a post, not *towards*, because having to expand every second post just to see if it's worth your time to read or not is tedious in itself.

@collin I feel like a dork either way and I really wish tags were just treated as a separate field which could then be optionally hidden from the posts completely... the reason they existed in Twitter in the first place is long obsolete and it presents so badly for humans to read, and especially anyone with a visual impairment.

@chartier I miss it dearly. Sometimes I still pull out my old Lumia 930 and fire it up. The user experience and aesthetics are so lovely in WP 8.1 and nothing else ever matched it, not even W10M.

With all the hubbub about #twitter dramas and lots of fresh faces to #mastodon, a bit of perspective: While Mastodon might be a much more ethical form of social media, it's still social media, and you should think very carefully about whether using it actually makes your life better. Only use technology that serves your values, not your vices.

@mur2501 @freemo How weird is it that us silly human beings reject a thing, replace it with a different thing, then demand the new thing be just like the thing we rejected.

@KatyElphinstone Searx is a federated search engine. It's not really a competitive alternative yet to the more monolithic search engines out there in my experience, unfortunately.

@atomicpoet I take the writing and the expression of it very seriously, and treat the performance of it as a pantomime. Heavy metal fans are nerds, we all know it, we all admit it, and it's always fun to geek out and have fun with kindred spirits at a metal show.

@mirkobrombin if ever there was an existing distribution that would be a perfect fit to be made immutable, Elementary feels like it would be the one.
