My online Moby Dick book club's reading for the week starts with Chapter 47, "The Mat Maker", which opens with Queequeg and Ishmael working on sword mats. Since on the nerd Venn diagram I sit at the intersection of "in an online Moby Dick book club" *and* "a member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers"", I decided to tie an example of a sword mat (which is the flat part of this assembly; the ring at the end is technically a simple ringbolt hitch.) 1/3#photography #knots #knotwork #igkt

The second photo shows the sword mat in progress, which is really not much more than a simple weave. The "sword" (usually a wooden stick of some sort; in this case I used chopsticks) is used to hold the warp of the knot open to let the weft (or "woof"; usually a hank of thinner line coiled up or on a netting shuttle as I've done here) pass through, and to push the weave tight between passes. 2/3

Tied in thin cord like this it would be used as a belt or as flat sinnet in a knotted frame; in heaver line it might see use as a "gripe", a lashing used to secure a small boat to the deck.3/3
