Among those:> Software mechanisms. ... give-away "look what software we are using" bits in URIs.There is an extra paragraph stressing this also holds for domain names.Now "Mastodon" is a particular technology. Hello, @feditips , maybe you want to add a note to your material: Names containing "mastodon" (or, for that matter, "mstdn" 😁) are a bad idea, from a long-term perspective. @hn100As this starts with slow 8 wpm, it's not Koch.Koch is 12 wpm from the start. This makes sure you are not training the habit of decoding CW by thinking. That habit, once thoroughly practiced, has to be painfully un-learned to reach higher speeds. It is an interesting exercise with a #hamradio antenna tuner: Can it bring the SWR down to 1 with nothing whatsoever attached to the antenna port?Some can do this, others can't. Try yours, especially if you have a manual tuner.My Z-match is one of those that can do this.Those that can, match their own internal losses. The energy of the TX can go nowhere else, so heats the tuner.You get to choose which ones you like better. Good arguments exist either way.@M0KHR@purple

My rule oft thumb is: A versatile tuner can reasonably be expected to tune a 2 x λ/8 dipole, but (even) shorter than that becomes painful. I'm with you, @M0KHR.Of course, "too short" isn't fixed. I've occasionally managed 160 m CW QSOs with 5 W into even shorter dipoles - but mostly in the IARU HF CC contests, with European HQ stations at the other end that can "hear the grass grow", in the middle of the night when those ops are bored and patient.@purple

@gretathunberg 's today toot marks her climate strike number 250.That anniversary I meet with sincere thankfulness for Greta and the entire FFF movement. Here in Germany, that thankfulness embraces @fff .Also, the anniversary is a cause for deep shame. 250! And we as a global society still have not moved in a way that can even remotely be considered sufficient!Here in Germany, a considerable amount of that shame goes to you, @BMWK . I'm proud I've occasionally been called a hacker. "Hacker" isn't what most people have been taught to associate with the term. The post this one answers has details.Yet, I have a need for a term "X" in statements like: "If you expose a Windows 7 computer to the internet with no firewall to protect it, some X will conquer it and use it for evil purposes within hours."Personally, I tend to use "cracker" for X.Is that the term to use? Back in the 90s, I had developed a shell script to automate some task. The script ran as root, on some UNIXoid department server. At one point, it'd do some cleanup likerm -rf "$parentdir/$subdir"One day, through some mishap, neither $parentdir nor $subdir were set. That day continued busier than it had started...Today, I avoid sh scripts for admin work if I can. My job forced a Mac on me. I used the Apple Bluetooth trackpad via USB all the time. I specifically configured Bluetooth off.USB devices are on when connected to a PC? Not Apple's. Need to switch on.One day, riding a train, I tried to use the laptop with built-in trackpad, the other left in the bag.Behaved completely erractically. Apple stuff is user-friendly? Not when I'm the user.Home office. Faraway WiFi router. Lousy connectivity.In the GHz range, a few cm this way or that can make a lot of difference. But I wanted to keep my Apple laptop exactly where it was on my desk.No problem: I found a spot of good WiFi field strength for my iPhone. Connected the two via USB cable.
