#TodayInOaklandHistory May 9, 1882, Henry J. Kaiser was born. Locally people associate the name with Kaiser Permanente, but Kaiser got his start in construction and made one of his most notable impacts with shipbuilding during WWII. Kaiser was also in aluminum, steel, cement, and even cars. The namesake Kaiser Center was once the tallest building in #Oakland. It included a penthouse apartment where Kaiser lived for a time. The adjacent parking garage includes a lovely roof garden. The garden is accessible to the public during regular business hours.https://oaklandwiki.org/Henry_J._Kaiser#OaklandHistory #OaklandWiki

"Current and former EPA scientists said that threat level is unheard of. It is a million times higher than what the agency usually considers acceptable for new chemicals and six times worse than the risk of lung cancer from a lifetime of smoking."https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/aug/04/epa-boat-fuel-cancer-risk-chevron-mississippi

Ever wonder what early transit in #Oakland looked like? The Oakland Railroad Company was started by some familiar names: Shattuck, Alden, Delger, and others, and the leadership soon included Emery and Durant. It started service in 1869, first to the city limits (then at 36th Street) and within a few years it went all the way up Telegraph to Berkeley and the University of California which had just moved from downtown Oakland. The one horse power cars were slow, so later a "steam dummy" was added for the section from Temescal to Berkeley.https://oaklandwiki.org/Oakland_Railroad_Company#OaklandHistory #OaklandWiki #RailroadHistory

@internetarchive Some of my family's home movies have been scanned by Rick and used in "Lost Landscapes".I assembled some of the clips of interest to family and #OaklandHistory and put them here:https://anderson.ouroakland.net/The film that wowed the family was my aunt graduating from UC Berkeley in 1939.

@grickle I think our cat Elton wrote this book. He's working on a follow-up book, which expands things to countertops, bookshelves -- you name it -- if something is on top of something else, it probably can (and definitely should) be knocked off#CatsOfMastodon #BlackCats
