When there’s news about bad decisions by a company/org, reading the Hacker News comments helps calm me down. I realize “at least these dumbasses aren’t in charge, so it’s not as bad as it could be”.

@urusan To my understanding, traumatic memories are also established more firmly than learned knowledge and skills, since the brain sees those as warnings about a survival threat. So those would be among the least affected.My mental model of “working through trauma” is that it happens when the person is able to integrate the traumatic experience into their mental schema without distorting the schema in a maladaptive way. So if you mean new, healthier pathways that make this integration happens, I agree, and I hope that’s the way it goes. But if you meant the newer pathways replace those related to the traumatic memory, that sounds both unlikely and something different from working through the trauma.

Does anyone use a desktop Mastodon client on #Linux?I’m trying #Whalebird. It has a couple nice features: keyboard navigation mainly (though even that’s a bit clunky), and multi-account management. But it feels quite heavy - #Electron to blame maybe - and is pretty limited in customization options.

@kmj #Sengi doesn’t work for #qoto for some reason, can’t go beyond the initial “provide your instance” screen. It reports “Http failure response for https://qoto.org/api/v1/apps: 504 Gateway Timeout”.

@MichaelPorter Edit is from a newer version of the Mastodon software, #Qoto doesn’t run it yet. An update is planned (for this and other features like language tagging), but no specific timelines yet.

@tilvids I support companies like Ford, IKEA, etc. starting their own instances - lots of companies have @companyname email IDs, having @company.social Mastodon accounts too would be interesting. A lot of people use the birdsite to talk to companies and get support, this could be a way to bring that here.I strongly dislike Google, Amazon and their Big Tech ilk starting instances though. The only reason they’d do it would be to embrace-extend-extinguish, control the conversation, and use their marketing budgets to turn the network into what they want it to be.

Followed a bunch of (mostly new) people. Realized that the thing that stopped me from using the birdsite - constant negativity and drama and people dunking on each others tribes - was starting to happen here too and making the site less appealing to me. Went ahead and unfollowed every single person that was making my feed unpleasant, whether by themselves or by boosts.I’d rather have a feed that has no updates in an hour, than one that has fifty updates and half of them bad for my #mentalhealth.#selfcare #positivefedi #TwitterMigration

@freemo Honestly, I probably would have disengaged from the Fediverse/Mastoverse a long time ago - or at best had a mostly dormant account (like I do on the birdsite) - because of stuff like this, if not for #QOTO.To my knowledge, this is the instance that comes closest to having the culture that Hacker News wants to have: Eschew flamebait. @juergen_hubert @NehaKhazanchi Qoto is based on Mastodon v3.2.1, but it’s actually a fork i.e. @freemo took the code and added a lot of features (incl. the Markdown support, quote posts, etc.) in Qoto’s branch of the code, so the version number doesn’t tell the full story. In this case, I believe Qoto added hashtag-following before the main Mastodon code did, you can find it at https://qoto.org/settings/follow_tags or going Preferences -> Follows and Subscriptions -> Following hashtags

@Romaq There's been ripples in the wider Mastodon community for several days about mastodon.social's moderation, and people have been actively moving away from it. I hadn't seen talk about defederation, but it makes sense that people consider it if it's problems are being exposed one by one. @freemo

@volkrisAdding a hashtag in that “Following hashtags” page is equivalent to clicking Follow on a hashtag’s results in other instances. This feature (the ability to follow hashtags) was added by @freemo independently before the mainline Mastodon had it, so has a different interface here.That said, I do agree that having that convenient Follow button available here also would be great.

The One Piece live action on Netflix has a Tamil dub, and it actually isn’t bad!Usually in Tamil dubs, they seem to take out all the flavour of the dialogue, making it very basic. So I was expecting to be disappointed and move back to English when I changed the Audio language, but they surprised me!#tamil #onepiece #anime #netflix
