#RandomRoad Moments: Window Trail, Big Bend National Park, TX, Dec 2022: My 27th or 28th #NationalPark in six years on the road. Sometimes I round it out to 30. That way I can say, 37 states, 30 National Parks. People seem to relate to that. I rate National Parks by their vibe and this one is right up there, a sort of Zion without the mobs. FYI, Lassen and New River Gorge also do it for me. Just me and this window into #nature. #WindowFriday #zen #road #vanlife #photography

@cattailnu Fifty seconds! And not just any old wolf. A paleo wolf, straight from the Siberian fossil beds. Forty seconds! A large wooden shaft and a piece of rock. Thirty seconds to flake off a double point, one end to drive into the shaft, the other for the wolf. Only one crack at this. She cradles the rock in one hand. Twenty seconds! Down with her curved antler whacker. Whack! Out flies the piece. She looks down. Ten seconds! She grabs the piece. Shit!

#RandomRoad Moments: Eastern OR, Aug 2019. I knew there had to be a genuine #ghosttown in the vicinity. I Googled and came upon Sumpter. It did not disappoint. The town enjoyed a brief gold boom way back when. This involved a crazy land-roving dredger that literally dug its own pond to float in and then extracted gold. The real gold lies in the stuff left behind, including the dredger. But it was the hulk of an ancient fire engine that caught my eye. Perfect! #photography #travel #zen #road

#RandomRoad Moments: Western OR, August 2017. When hanging out by a #waterfall, be sure to bring at least one #didgeridoo. In my case, I could have just borrowed one. Every summer, our didgeridoo tribe gathers out in the woods. What better way to accompany the gentle rush of cascading water than sounding out an earthy drone on an instrument built for playing in nature? If you don't have a didge, bring a drum or a flute. #RandomRoad Moment: Remains of the day, Crystal Beach, Bolivar Peninsula, TX, Nov 2022.. For a $10 beach pass, I was free to park my van on the sand and camp out. I love this time of day, when the earth shifts gears and one settles in with a tea, imbibing the #zen. Then the rigor of waking up to a sunrise over the Gulf the next morning, sipping a coffee, this time bathed in a yellow glow. Don't know how I manage. #nature #photography #Tao #road #vanlife

#RandomRoad Moment: Yellowstone, Sept 2019. The secret to looking for wolves is to look for the people looking for wolves. A lot of oozing and ahhing was going on here. I pulled over. Cameras on tripods with zoom lenses were aimed at a certain spot across the road. Someone pointed a finger. A family of grizzlies! Wow! Later on, a couple of black wolves paid a visit. Next morning, a pack of ten. Wow! Geysers are fine, but the thrill of sighting grizzlies and wolves - big wow. #nature #zen

#RandomRoad Moments: Kaaterskill Falls, Catskills, NY, July 2017. According to Washington Irving, Rip Van Winkle took the mother of all power naps in the vicinity. Irving mentions the Falls by name. My hike didn't take nearly as long, but I felt the Falls drawing me in, and I spent a longer time here than I'd planned. Indeed, an enchanted forest. Do enchanted forests have different rules? #RandomRoad Moments: Sharp Top Mountain, VA, Aug 2021. Just a short easy hike, I thought. Ha! No such thing as an easy hike along the Blue Ridge, particularly any summit hike. Gentle grades are unknown. Unremittingly vertical is de rigueur for the Appalachians. Half-mile from the top, my lungs went on strike. Rubber legs. Long break. #RandomRoad Moments: Giant Rock, Mohave Desert, CA, Jan 2017. Said to be the largest free-standing boulder in the world at 7 feet, this was the site of George Van Tassel's #UFO conventions during the 50s and 60s. VT claimed to have been visited by Venusians, who gave him the plans for the nearby Integraton, a trippy as hell sound chamber/time machine. #RandomRoad Moments: Little Talbot Island FL, March 2022. Not the beach scene you'd expect in FL. Bleak, blustery, all to myself. Yet, just inland lies a profusion of tropical growth, plus rich wetlands supporting a multitude of aquatic and bird life. It rained like crazy my three or four days here. Soon, there will be plenty of sun for those well-watered inland trees to feed on. Not to mention renewed wetlands. In the meantime, enjoy the stroll. #Photomonday #nature #photography

#RandomRoad Moments: Joshua Tree National Park, Feb 2017. It's a trick. No one actually stacked these stones. The way I understand it, long ago, water dripped into the fissures of underground rocks and did its expanding and contracting thing, acting as wedges. Later, the ground eroded, exposing these jaw-dropping megaliths.Then the wind went to work, carving and sculpting and rounding out. The Joshua trees have their own stories to tell. #standingstonesunday #nature #photography
