Happy Krishna Janmashtami! Today is the day to celebrate the Janma (birth) of Sri Krishna, the eighth Avatara (incarnation)of Lord Vishnu. Krishna is one of the most beloved of the Hindupantheon and his holidays are always celebrated lavishly. The word Krishna means “Black or dark blue”, and he is also called Shyama, which means “The color of twilight”. Krishna is known and praised for his beauty, wisdom, compassion, and his playful, fun-loving nature. Krishna is always fair, impartial and quick to defend his devotees.

This is a scene from a Puranic text called the Devi Mahatmyam: "Glory of the Goddess". Here the goddess Durga (seated on a lion) fighting an army of demons. In the midst of battle, one of the demons insulted her and she became so enraged that goddess Kali (shown in dark blue) emanated from her third eye and jumped onto the battlefield. Devi Mahatmyam is the foundational text of Shaktam and is regularly recited during Navaratri.

Namaste subscribers! We are in the middle of a very important celebration called Navaratri. Navaratri means “Nine Nights”, and it is dedicated to the goddess Durga. She is known for vanquishingdemons, granting the wishes of her devotees, being the daughter of the Himalayas, marrying Lord Shiva and giving birth to Ganesha, the Elephant-headed God. She is the embodiment of motherhood, feminine power, and compassion. Her worship, iconography, and philosophy forms the third largest sect of Hinduism, knownas Shaktam—The Path of Power. Those who follow Shaktam affirm the vitality and spiritual potency of the material world, which is believed to be a product of her divine creativity.

I worship him as the great King Soma, dressed in White. Whoever worships him as such, the Soma pressed andre-pressed for him everyday, and his food never fails. Brhadaaranyaka Upanishad

One's asceticism, giving, honesty, non-violence,and truth speaking are one's gifts to the priests. So they say, “she will give birth!” “she has given birth!” This is one's resumption of the sacrifice. Death is one's bath at the end. Ghora Angirasa taught this to Krishna, the son of Devaki, for he had become free from thirst (desire). At the time of death one should take refuge in thesethree recollections:You are the unperishing. You are the unfallen. You are the subtlest part of the breath. Chandogya Upanishad

Goddess of wild and forest who seems to vanish from sight. How is it that you seek not the village? Are you not afraid? What time the grasshopper replies and swells the shrill cicada's voice, Seeming to sound with tinkling bells, the Lady of the Wood exults. And, yonder, cattle seem to graze, what seems a dwelling-place appears: Or else at evening the Lady of the Forest seems to free the wagons. Here one is calling to his cow, another there has felled a tree:At evening the dweller in the wood fancies that someone has screamed. The Goddess never slays, unless some murderous enemy approach. Man eats of savory fruit and then takes, even as he wills, his rest. Now have I praised the Forest Queen, sweet-scented, redolent of balm, The Mother of all woodland things, who tills not but has stores of food. Rig Veda, Hymn 10.146 Aranyani (The Forest Woman)
