@aphyr And it's... pretty accessible! not the best, but shoot it's the best iOS, non-JB, can offer for now. Until UTM gets good enough to run a Linux VM. Thank goodness for AltStore.

@weirdwriter Hey, just letting you know, the page formatting seems to be a tad broken. After the heading level one is a lot of HTML and CSS stuff just bare for the world to see, then a heading with like the first sentance, then a heading 3 with the actual article. If you're not seeing this, I can give you what is shown on my end. Boosting anyways because as usual, your articles are great and deserve wide dissemination. Thank goodness for spell check. And yeah, the ironic twist at the end, about your hero being someone who refused a blind man a job, wow! That was a great showcase of how this all works, and so very sad too! Like, that's so how ignorant sighted people are! I'm not one of those who hate sighted people, treating them like [Moash](https://coppermind.net/wiki/Moash) treats the Light-eyes, but I mean, we show people time and time again that we *can* do things. And the media sure as heck don't help us, treating us like things that can be Shattered at the lightest touch, and poor widdle special needs children that need protecting and isolating.

@sesivany I do wish it was Fedora Mate, as Gnome isn't the most accessible to the few blind Linux users who can bash their heads against Linux to reshape their minds into something that'll accept Linux's huge accessibility issues, but ah well. First steps I suppose.

@qrsbrwn @sesivany This is true. And I *love* that Fedora often has up-to-date packages. Well, maybe not as up-to-date as Arch, but I definitely appreciate that Fedora doesn't treat just-released software like a beta or something. I mean, Pandoc is a great example. There's a new release every few months. Ubuntu? 2004 even? like 2.5 or so, can't check right now but definitely not near up to date.

@sir I admit to being ignorant about CPU architecture. Really, I think the optimization of software is much more important than the hardware it runs on. At least, nowadays. At least, for accessibility features.

@qrsbrwn @sesivany Oh but they have Chromebooks for that! /s Hmm, what about a Raspberry Pi 4 or something? Oh, right, laptop. Yeah, that is something.

@qrsbrwn @sesivany WSL? Or a VM then? SSH? Oh, well, maybe not introduce him to Linux with the command line, so maybe a VM then.

@toast I had it as an extra control when I used Linux, for Emacs of course. Now... Yeah, maybe super would be good for that.

Today, I learned a little about Python functions. It's a lot simpler than I thought from reading books, but sometimes it can get challenging to think inside the indent... I think I just made a new state of mind... And then going from inside to outside the indent, and all that. Like multitasking in the mind or something. But yeah, gonna learn about returns tomorrow! Thank goodness my screen reader can denote indentation levels through sound. Some, like VO on Mac, can't even denote them through speech! Thanks Apple. Better hope Swift doesn't require indentation, lol.#a11y #codecademy #coding

So, Voiceover, iOS' screen reader, can basically use a Machine Learning algo to create an accessible UI, as far as possible, for iOS apps. It can also describe images, and some text within the image. It's not perfect, but it helps a lot. I've not seen any evidence that Google or even Microsoft are heading in that direction. I love the way Microsoft is going, but they're going about it very slowly. I mean, Apple, basically the Debian of software features in mobile phones, has outpaced anything the other two mainstream OS developers have done, and I'm not even going to get into Linux at this point because it might as well not even be in the race for accessibility.Image and text recognition are out of this world levels of accurate. It describes most photos like a human would, and that's just plain amazing! Not even Facebook has gotten to this level! Now, that doesn't mean that people can stop describing images. It just means that if you don't, which quite a few people I follow do not, I have a backup, and maybe I'll be able to even understand the photo. That's what all this recognition is about, having a way to enjoy things, even if devs or content creators don't give a crap! And when I use Windows, I miss that so much. Just being able to focus on an image, and get a pretty good description of it. Yes, Narrator has a feature like that, but not everyone uses Narrator, Windows' built-in screen reader. And it requires an Internet connection, so if you don't want Microsoft getting your images, you'd better start describing! And Linux doesn't have anything like that, so describe, for FOSS' sake!#a11y #apple #microsoft #FOSS

@adfeno @grainloom I mean, I'd like to even be able to *play* those games. I'm totally blind. I mean, I can use OCR for text, but not much else for actual gameplay. But I have emulators and fighting games, Dissidia Final Fantasy for PSP being my favorite of all time.

@adfeno @grainloom We need much more of that. If blind people are going to take #Foss seriously, FOSS devs will have to take us seriously too. I know, accessibility isn't very fun to hack on. But for us, Linux, LibreOffice, current Wordpress, and no FOSS game, are not fun at all except to the most die-hard Apple/Microsoft haters among us, and they are very, very few. When closed source software does what we want, and need for our jobs, and enjoy for our relaxation, idealism is meaningless. I mean, we can't even *use* Ubuntu Touch because either Orca or something in the accessibility stack doesn't support touch screens. So really, if devs are interested in accessibility, they'll have to make stuff happen before being taken seriously. That's just what it's come down to. We in the blind community just don't have time for pie in the sky wishful thinking when 70% or so of us don't have jobs.

So, I'm finally on Linux! I'm not quite ready to install Arch, so I went with Slint, a Slackware (Salux) based distro, but things are working... okay except Emacspeak with Voxin is kinda messy on this distro, and weird stuff is going on because the distro maker tried to fix Alsa and Pulseaudio's bull crap. But all in all, it works okay, thanks to the Mate desktop mainly. <sarcasm>Oh and Pluma is broken, so that's nice.</sarcasm> but the installation was accessible, it came up talking, unlike the current Debian image because stability lol, and does what it says it does. Sometimes great, sometimes broken... Ugh I need to get good at installing Arch.#foss #a11y

@Demosthenes I could have done ubuntu, but I wanted something closer to Arch, and I hate out-of-date packages, I really do. Especially for accessibility reasons.
