Silicon Valley archaeology on a Sunday afternoon: Meta’s HQ was originally Sun Microsystems’, until Oracle bought Sun and Facebook bought its buildings. To make a statement, Facebook updated the front of the old Sun Microsystems sign, facing the road, but left its decaying back untouched.

BTW, I’ve been fascinated by this old sign for some time now. The insides used to be much cruftier, as shown in these photos. Facebook/Meta have cleaned it up since then and fixed some bent metal in the old Sun sign.

Another fun fact: When Facebook moved into the old Sun buildings, they converted it to open-plan seating, tearing out all the old private offices.

Sun certainly used to be all over the place (and I remember when it was all/mostly at one place on Rengstorff). Here’s a sign on an old Google building that used to be an old Sun building.

Here’s a creative new way to avoid legal liability! TripAdvisor says •they• didn’t create this hotel description on their website; some random •AI• created it for them and at their behest, so •they• certainly can’t be held responsible! (Or is the passive tense because some freelance AI spontaneously hacked into TripAdvisor’s website and inserted a whole buncha text all by itself, with no humans involved? Let’s guess not.) And if the descriptions TripAdvisor puts on its website are false or deceptive or misleading, I guess it’s still not TripAdvisor’s problem (they’ll say) but rather their AI’s fault. Will the bad AI have to pay a fine or go to prison?I know, I know, Section 230(c)(1) of the Communications Decency Act makes platforms not liable for harmful content posted by third parties — but if you feed arbitrary posts into an AI, and then you adjust the prompts until you get the desired output, and then you post that output on your own platform, will the FTC really agree you can’t possibly be liable? Because you didn’t really do it? Because your AI did it for you?

My Windows XP Crocs were just delivered, covered with geeky desktop-icon charms! When they were announced a couple of months ago, all the news stories explained they’re currently available only to Microsoft employees… and me too, I guess!

Google Maps lets drivers mark “Unplowed Roads.” These warnings are now popping up in Southern California to warn of ICE agents on the loose… because of the “icy” conditions. I love users!
