@bVork @drewharwell Huh. It's all public data, but that amount of sleuthing makes it feel a little like doxxing. You can track down my home address through public data (since I bought my home), but that wouldn't make it cool to post online. I mean, Musk is definitely a bad actor in all this and knowing a plane's location isn't the same as knowing a person's location, but I can see why some people might find this worrisome.

@clive Sigh. I’m too old for this. I never internet a period that way, but now I find myself constantly reminding myself to leave period off because so many people interpret them badly. I mean, interpret them badly

This seems a little cautious, at least on the text generation policies. There’s a whiff of the idea that if a journalist uses an AI then the journalist can’t possibly be responsible for the final edit. That’s not true. At least, that’s not what I would teach my students. If you use an AI tool to generate ideas or knock out boilerplate or polish an essay, you’re still responsible as the author for that essay.

@clive Oh, that's a good point about YouTube transcripts.I blogged this week about whether ChatGPT is an answer machine or wordsmith or something else: https://derekbruff.org/?p=4071. The ChatGPT plugins changed my thinking about what kind of tool it is--more of a natural language interface to the web.

@clive This reminds of the “Shirley cards” that Kodak sent out to its one-hour photo shops in the 50s to calibrate their printers. The result was printers that did poorly with non-white skin… for decades. There wasn’t a non-white “Shirley” until the 80s. https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/shirley-cards/
