An excellent but brief overview of the history of ODF. Well worth watching if you're interested in #freesoftware but unfamiliar with with this bit of history."A silent war has shaped the digital world: ODF vs OOXML. From the rise of OpenOffice.org and #LibreOffice to Microsoft’s controversial standardization of OOXML, this video tells the untold story of control, freedom, and the future of digital documents."#Microsoft #BigTech #Computing https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dgxhn3bCD58

Apple to GNU/Linux Journal - GNU Emacs"Back in late May and early June I began to give GNU Emacs a try. I’d opened it once or twice before only to quit it after a few minutes. Why bother when there are so many other text editors to choose from? The first thing I noticed about GNU Emacs was that it used different keybindings from those that have become fairly standard across most text editors. So, right off, that was a...#Apple #GNU #Linux #FreeSoftware #Emacs https://beardystarstuff.net/posts/2025-08-19.html

@aral Agreed. Aren't you describing the long history of European>Now U.S. settler colonialism? It continues, now with Israel as the tip of the spear. But it's the same, long thread of genocide. Globally, it's the European North dominating and extracting from the South. A process of violence, extraction, enslavement and, when necessary, genocide. Most in the US couldn't be bothered to care because they benefited from that process. Now it's turned in on us so we'll suffer. Chickens roosting.

If you're in Missouri and want to share Free Software with others I'm looking for folks to join in the effort.Fascism is here. Whether it's coming from the current admin or capitalists, #FreeSoftware is worth fighting for. We do not have to accept their effort to control us. We do not have to cooperate in our own subjugation. We can organize in our communities to help others be more free. We can all do our part.#Resist #Computing #BigTech #microsoft #Google #Applehttps://libreplanet.org/wiki/Group:LibrePlanet_Missouri

RE: https://zeppelin.flights/@sixcolors/115871014448245458"It is absolutely unconscionable that, as of this writing, X is not only still on the App Store but is ranked #1 in “News” and that Grok is the #3 free app. Moreover, there has been—as far as I have seen—no public statement from Apple or Cook about this situation in the days, at least, over which it has unfolded. Probably because it is indefensible. "Start the process to quit Apple today.Services- iCloud- Music- TVFuture: GNU/Linux - It's better than you think.#Apple #Tech #Resist

Here are some sceenshots of Mint on a 2018 Lenovo laptop I bought for $250 on Ebay. I'll be able to use this laptop for many years to come, far longer than any Mac computer runs macOS.It boots faster than an M1 MacMini running macOS. Apps launch faster than they do on the Mac. No #Apple #surveillance. Full control of MY device with a free, #privacy respecting OS produced by people concerned not with profit but with making a great OS. Same for the #FreeSoftware I use everyday.

Also from the article: "It’s one thing not to expect political activism from large corporations, but to compromise your stated values all in the name of business as usual simply exposes that your values never meant anything in the first place. Lopatto called it right: cowards." I would say the same thing about Apple users that refuse to take any action themselves. As is the usual, throw up hands, claim there is nothing I can do. FUCKING MAKE THE EFFORT or stop pretending you have values.

"No number of customers will desert Apple over this that will make so much as a ding on the company’s bottom line. And even if they did, there is only one real alternative, Google, which is doing the exact same thing. The only thing that can force these corporations to act is government regulation—and whoops, this administration has not only pulled the rug out from under its regulatory agencies, it also literally employed the chief perpetrator."See, this NOT TRUE. Why give up without trying?

The design of the Cinnamon Desktop on #Mint is fantastic with easy to use UI that's not enshitified by a company that produces things like Liquid Glass because they've got to always be shitting out the next new thing because profit, profit, profit. There is no Wall Street/ shareholder pleasing going on. This is an OS and software ecosystem by and for users, NOT constant grift and rent seeking. No ads, no intrusion, no surveillance.#LinuxMint #Linux #Tech #Apple #Microsoft #Google

There are alternatives, see my other posts . Why do #Apple folks so quickly give-up? They'll complain but they won't make any real effort to do the alternatives. And they do exist. And, conveniently, they jump to the conclusion that a large scale boycott is impossible. Easy and convenient to jump to that. But why is such a thing impossible? Folks in the US are quit without even trying. This is exactly why we face fascism today. Folks in the US don't want to take responsibility or action.

I've been happily using #FreeSoftware for 10 months. Everything I would otherwise be doing on macOS or an iPad is easily done on GNU/Linux:- Coding and managing websites with apps like Kate and Filezilla- Spreadsheets with LibreOffice Calc- Writing with Emacs or Ghostwriter- Web browsing with LibreWolf (more private than Safari) - Local music with Rhythmbox- Local cloud with Syncthing- Local password management with KeePassXC- Local photo editing with digiKam, cloud sync with Ente

Other #privacy focused services that can replace both cloud services like iCloud by Apple or Google docs:- Proton offers a range of encrypted services, all #opensource and audited: email, cloud storage w/ shared documents and collaboration, VPN, Password management and more- Tuta offers encrypted email, open source and audited- Mailbox offers encrypted email- Signal, encrypted, open source, audited messaging, takes seconds to set-up, cross platform, works on mobile devices and computers.

@benjamim @briar @Em0nM4stodon Yes, but your comment and others in this thread seem to be missing the point that the alternatives to Signal are not easily adoptable. In the current moment, people organizing against #ICE, we need something people can actually sign-up for and use. This isn't about the most pure, ideal selfhosted messaging that nerds might love. This is about getting non-tech people who are fighting ICE on the streets set-up to use a cross platform, encrypted messaging app.

@lxo @benjamim @briar @Em0nM4stodon The people in Minneapolis have been using Signal daily to coordinate their efforts on the streets to protect each other against ICE. I think they would say that it's been very good and useful in their self defense efforts in recent weeks. The fact that Signal uses AWS doesn't negate the usefulness of the app. The communications are encrypted. The only exploit is a FED getting my unlocked device or targeting me with Zero click malware.

@lxo @benjamim @briar @Em0nM4stodon I don't think you're talking about Signal. Or, if you are, it seems like you do not understand how Signal works. You can read more about it at the link attached. As long as my device is physically secure and the person/device I am communicating with has a secured device, the Feds cannot access the communication. @lxo @benjamim @briar @Em0nM4stodon No, I get that. You're suggesting that Signal cannot protect if the phone, mine or the recipient's is compromised. Agreed. In that case not much can protect the communications. That's not a fault or flaw with Signal. The vast majority of people's phones have not been compromised and in those cases Signal's encryption is what is needed and can be trusted. Your original point isn't very helpful given that fact.

@lxo @benjamim @briar @Em0nM4stodon So, don't use any mobile phone by any manufacturer because it is 100% certain that it is compromised from the factory? Or is there some process to make one secure? What would you recommend as a solution? Is there a solution for a "normal user" who does not have deep knowledge of this?

One of my local volunteer projects is the library's website which I'm updating this morning as Cosmo waits for second breakfast. Happily using #FreeSoftware: ghostwriter for markdown conversion to html. Then I'll use Kate to edit a couple html files then upload with Filezilla. #GNU #Linux @linuxmint and the Cinnamon DE. All running on a 2018 #Thinkpad bought for $250 on Ebay.No need for new/expensive hardware from #apple. No #malware from #Microsoft or #google#UpCycle #FOSS #Tech
