One important thing for anti-electoralists to keep in mind: the establishment of an overt #fascist #dictatorship under #Trump and #Vance would make any and ALL approaches to ending capitalism and otherwise improving our society 1000 times more difficult — INCLUDING non-electoral approaches.

@interfluidity @sjshancoxli IOW billionaires and bigots alike are fundamentally about cutting off their noses to spite their faces. The fundamental divide is between those who want to be better off in absolute terms vs. those who want to boss others around.

@interfluidity @sjshancoxli Yes. But these same bossy asshats resist every effort to create greater security for all through #basicincome, housing reform, public healthcare, etc. Security, too, can be relative. And these people have basically sold their souls to the devil. Metaphorically speaking, of course.

@interfluidity @sjshancoxli Only if your core value is the right to put a boot on someone else's face does fascism start to make sense.

@interfluidity @sjshancoxli This is of course a broad-brush oversimplification. I think there are many who appear to be all in on relative position, but are actually conflicted, and could be bought off with enough absolute prosperity and security if it were on offer. But they despair of it, and become bigots out of sheer sour grapes.

@interfluidity @sjshancoxli Probably true. And there is, in physical chemistry terms, a potential barrier separating the two regimes. The offer of prosperity and security needs to be GENEROUS, not minimal, to overcome that barrier. Instead of seeing their task clearly, the lanyards blame it on racism — as if that were a core value, instead of a symptom.

@interfluidity @sjshancoxli This also gets to why I am so FURIOUS with the corporate Democratic Party for having let things get this close to a precipice. These damn lanyards are the ones who should have been trying hard to provide enough prosperity and security to buy off the conflicted bigots. Instead, they too have gone along with the billionaire script.

@interfluidity @sjshancoxli That's what I'm counting on, too. That this will be too close for comfort. Not in terms of percentage of the vote, but in terms of psychological vividness.

@interfluidity @sjshancoxli I'm reminded of the scenes in The Lord of the Rings where people to whom Mordor and the Dark Lord were never more than old tales are overshadowed by the fumes of Mount Doom and confronted by orc armies and flying Nazgûl.

@futurebird I've seen much worse than this in computer science texts. Instead of different fonts or cases, I've seen a single formula with 3 different occurrences of italic lowercase "t" with 3 different meanings. You're supposed to be able to tell which is which.

@interfluidity And if true, this means that the rest of the world is right to dismiss Americans, on average at least, as deeply unserious people.

@interfluidity I'm including not only the ones who voted, but the ones who stayed home. If you're right about the thinking of the #Trump voters, then the motivations of the nonvoters were probably similar. They couldn't stomach Trump, but they couldn't get excited about #KamalaHarris. She was no Teddy Roosevelt (and not just because of her gender). Her superiority over Trump on the issues couldn't overcome their apathy about her personally. "She has no substance" one such person told a pollster.

@interfluidity @davidsirota My one real difference with this account is that I don't think the debacle can be hung on #Kamala's campaign specifically. It's a longer-term thing. This election revealed that the Gallup "enthusiasm" numbers were a mirage and that the electorate had become so pathological that probably nothing #Kamala's campaign could have done differently would have affected the result. So what might have? Maybe running Bernie Sanders in 2016/2020, or a better Obama administration.

@futurebird Power posturing is particularly vile when it happens in academia. Power games are more befitting to a troop of baboons than a community of scholars.

@futurebird @unspeaker My #1 on my wish list is for post composition windows to automatically remain open and NOT LOSE YOUR DRAFT when you navigate away from Tusky (or other app) and then navigate back!

@futurebird @unspeaker I'd also like to be clearer on what features (or misfeatures) are:(1) Specific to Tusky (or other app)(2) Specific to mastodon.social (or other server)(3) General to the whole Fediverse. For example: I notice that people I follow can write long posts, but I can't. Is this some setting I haven't turned on yet, or do I need to switch from mastodon.social to another server if I want to write long posts?

@MamasPinkyToe The way this country is going, you may have to transport yourself across international borders if such is your intent!
