"As co-leader of Google’s small ethical AI team, Timnit Gebru was one of the authors of an academic paper that warned about the kind of AI that is increasingly built into our lives, ... The clear danger, it said, is that such supposed 'intelligence' is based on huge data sets that 'overrepresent hegemonic viewpoints & encode biases ... #AI threatens to deepen the dominance of a way of thinking that is white, male, comparatively affluent & focused on the US & Europe.'"https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/may/22/there-was-all-sorts-of-toxic-behaviour-timnit-gebru-on-her-sacking-by-google-ais-dangers-and-big-techs-biases?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other

Oh! Interesting book (and follow) for my peeps:"Facebook’s algorithms shaping the news. Self-driving cars roaming the streets. Revolution on Twitter and romance on Tinder. We live in a world constructed of code–and coders are the ones who built it for us. Programmers shape our everyday behavior: When they make something easy to do, we do more of it. When they make it hard or impossible, we do less of it. From acclaimed tech writer Clive Thompson ..."@clive https://saturation.social/@clive/110721161866998363

A reminder about hashtags:Please use camelCase when writing hashtags. It allows screenreader software to properly parse the hashtag so it makes sense to visually limited users. Don't be lazy and use the all-lowercse suggestions your client app suggests :-\ Like this: #livingWageForAllNot: #livingwageforall

"A typical vaccine teaches the human immune system to recognize a virus or bacteria as an enemy that should be attacked. The new “inverse vaccine” does just the opposite: it removes the immune system’s memory of one molecule. While … unwanted for infectious diseases, it can stop autoimmune reactions like those seen in MS, type I diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or Crohn’s disease, in which the immune system attacks a person’s healthy tissues."@noondlyt https://mastodon.social/@noondlyt/111066765579869735

Interesting, how many boosts and likes this post of mine has. Does this mean that a lot of people have/are aware of autoimmune diseases? Research suggests those are going to continue increasing, since even "mild" covid infections cause "long covid" immune sequelae, sometimes only months later .../cc @noondlyt

🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨I just wrote emails to the Canadian PM, Min. Foreign Affairs, & my MP, asking them to call out ALL war crimes happening in/near Israel. The damage is long-lasting: research shows chance of PTSD & trauma-related mental illness is significantly elevated when people feel hopeless, trapped. My heart breaks. This is no time for excusing our allies. 🙏 Please contact your own representatives, asking them to INFLUENCE *all* parties to respect international conventions against war crimes.

Very disturbing:TL;DR: Hotline workers unionise, get replaced by AI, within weeks helpline is shut down for safety reasons. A client says "I would have died, had I had that advice early in my illness"."the National Eating Disorders Association helpline, which tried to replace human volunteers with a chatbot--and why the datafication & automation of mental health services are an injustice that will disproportionately affect the already vulnerable."@JB611 #AI #chatbot https://dair-community.social/@JB611/111237905570862404

Just saw that a (Canadian?) study shows that, after their 3rd #covid19 infection, older folks' chances are about 1-in-3 for #longCovid.I've got enough brain fog to be worrisome, already, after 2 infections.Count me out. I'm going to be very anti-social this holiday season, and feel good about it. I like my brain the way it is. Well ... the way it was, truth be told, but this is what I've got and I'm gonna keep it. 😷I thank God for zoom.

"Dismissal & gaslighting — you’re just depressed; it’s in your head — are among the worst aspects of long Covid, and can be as crushing as the physical suffering. They’re hard to fight because the symptoms can be so beyond the realm of everyday experience … Journalism, then, can be a conduit for empathy, putting words to the indescribable and clarifying the unfathomable for people too sick to do it themselves."-ed yong

"… I hope that this serves as a guide to reporting on patients with chronic energy-limiting illness, a call to do more such reporting, & a mission statement about why such work is necessary & what it can achieve. It’s really about journalism as a whole, & how this work made me re-evaluate some of what I had internalized about my industry’s values and practices. It forced me to do better. I hope this piece inspires others in the same way."- ed yong

"The Department of Housing and Urban Development just reported that homelessness in the US jumped a startling 12% from '22 to '23 as covid-era social programs came to an end.2 other recent news stories have filled me with revulsion. In Missouri, conservative legislators sneaked through a law that criminalized sleeping outside on 'state-owned lands' and also limited the use of public funds to build 'permanent supportive housing.'"@charliejane #HousingCrisis #usPol 🤬 https://wandering.shop/@charliejane/111653781819779995
