@simon It does the trick performers (street performers, YouTube performers, magicians, etc) have done for ages: invest more time into a trick than any reasonable human would expect.

@simon The applicable problem space is even fuzzier because there’s some things they do well, but not consistently. Which to me means the problem space has to be limited to areas where the cost of a false-positive/negative is low.

@simon Also agree. Bureaucracy—where forms and formulas have tried to interface with humans as if they were APIs—and it’s artifacts is where the potential energy lies. Anywhere there is rote tasks and boredom is the X marking the spot.I call it the ‘Brazil Antidote’ model. Doesn’t get enough attention because it’s not sexy. I’m going to found the Boring AI Working Group.

@simon @timbray I think the jump from bike to car fits better, if only because nearly all users of cars don't understand how they work and the mechanisms are largely hidden.

@simon The problem is so much of the construction of the model is that frequency of occurrence = trust. That and ChatGPT (in particular) presents itself as intelligence. It's right in the name (AI). If it pretends to be human enough to pass the average user's personal Turing Test and it's sold and positioned as intelligence, there's going to be a problem.

@simon Can you confirm or deny an assumption I have: we're using natural language to 'program' LLMs because we don't really understand how to manipulate their internals other than adding more training. Correct or nah?

@simon @allafarce Same. I don't think it's in their current priority set. They want to both drive massive adoption while stoking fears to drive protective regulation. There are a steady stream of examples of Altman talking out of both sides of his mouth.

@simon AI for ffmpeg incantations is a killer app.

@simon I've been considering building a local map for Alameda for a couple years to aggregate niche and/or more detailed data. Now that the Overture data is out, I have less excuses for bringing this to life.It feels absurd to build something for outdoor dining, but there's so much data that is beyond generic scope of a universal mapping app. Am exciting for more nuanced stuff.

@cabel @gn We've sacrificed countless researchers and engineers to triple our pixel density and dial our contrast ratios to the limit....to display solid flat colors.

@simon @ramsey No, would be a waste to have you build it. Large VC firms have this very role (someone who visits big cos, gives talks about what’s new, sets up pilots for portfolio cos, and glad hands), we need this for OSS that’s smaller and more agile than the big foundations.

@simon In order, I'd recommend to someone without coding experience:1. WordPress2. Squarespace (been around awhile, bought Google domains, easy to use)3. Public pages on NotionBut: no one is close to Wordpress. I read a blog from a homeless guy who camps in the Berkeley hills who's been posting to Wordpress for a decade+, using a pay-go Android phone. No one else is as stable, easy, or accessible. If someone knows how the command line works, Github pages is a good option as well.

I was following the CAISO stats closely in 21 and 22, but am SHOCKED to see what they look like in 2024: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/05/07/climate/battery-electricity-solar-california-texas.html

I'm curious how low gas can go during the day while still be available during the evenings and nights...
