@skobkin Why is this poll restricted to only two genders?

@skobkin I see nothing in the post that would restrict non-binary or agender people from being able to answer the question. I suspect many would have an opinion on the topic.

@skobkin Then why mention gender at all if you only can do two options? Leave it a yes/no question instead. There’s no need to exclude people if you just want to create a general poll. #InclusiveLanguage

Then you could have a link to a better polling site and be inclusive, instead of letting a restriction of this site be an excuse to exclude people. Or you could just say that you don’t care about the opinions of people who don’t fit into the boxes of an imaginary gender binary, and people will know where you stand. And if you don’t want people outside of your friend group to see and comment on the poll, then don’t post it on public.

@chrismak @mekkaokereke @kagan I remember growing up in Higher Ed and reading the serious articles passed around academic circles claiming that Gen-X would have memory problems because we had the internet and didn’t have to remember common information. While every generation dumps on the next (there’s some fun stuff from Ancient Rome), Boomers as a generation have made it a pastime to actively and authoritatively dump on ALL of the successive generations. And since they are big and have continued to retain power, professionals have been repeating and acting on their generational bigotry for way too long. Gen-X are not slackersMillennials are not underachievers Gen Z is not selfishGen Alpha is not impatientAll of these are labels applied by Boomers to generations who have been denied the same privileges that the outsized, generally prosperous Boomer generation enjoyed. As a mid-Gen X, I am very proud of the younger generations who continue to do the best they can under oppressive circumstances. We didn’t deserve the name-calling, and they don’t either.

@zleap @ada Conservatives are afraid of/angry about anyone who thinks, looks, or acts differently than their idea of the mainstream 1950s and 60s based on American advertising. Anyone not interested or able to fit into their picture of what “should be” (that never was) is a target. And they will always start with those with the least perceived power in our society, the safe targets. And then continue to target bigger groups as they have more and more success shaping public opinion. They blame the people who don’t fit into their ideal mold of what life should look like for anything that they feel powerless to change. And rich conservatives use that hatred to steer them. Kids who already fighting not to be shunned are the easiest target now, with transitioning adults already being hit by the follow-up legislation. That kids who sexually mature early can’t get those drugs either is a feature, not a bug. Bi and pan people are also on the early bigot menu as a threat to both mainstream culture and gay and lesbians who have been assimilated into that culture (because while the religious don’t like them, they aren’t seen as a big threat, as they generally stay in their own circles to date - they can wait.! Pan and bi people are scary and may steal “their” partner/property at any time. Aeros and Aces are discredited as either “like everyone else” or not worthy of anything but being a worker to be exploited. The childfree are already shunned as “child haters” (actually a very small portion), and pressured (and now often raped, since they can’t easily get an abortion). We’ve already seen their lack of compassion for the ill and elderly during Covid-19 that is still ongoing. They consider them a drain on society and are perfectly fine with them dying either through preventable illness or neglect. The same holds true for those with mental illness (fortunately that’s getting better with younger generations, despite the gospel of Health & Wealth). People of other races than white are always a threat to their perfect picture. But having enough wealth and being gullible enough that they think being tolerated equals acceptance, that buys minorities protection from overt racism as part of the unofficial ruling class. The rest are seen as lesser by conservatives and they believe they should be serving them, not voting and owning property. A few exceptions can be made, but they are always othered. Note that actually being LGBT+ is fine for them as long as you stay completely in the closet and cover your tracks. And having sex with someone trans is “tasting the forbidden” and a desired activity, as long as nobody else knows. Sexually abusing your own child bride isn’t the same as sexually abusing kids. Hitting your wife is fine, as long as the bruises don’t show. As long as the title isn’t applied to them and anything “degenerate” according to their churches is kept behind closed doors, everything they do that is evil is okay and can be forgiven or ignored. And those of us who live openly, consensually, and proudly when they are forced to hide in order to keep their place in their community make conservatives furious. Preachers throwing hate from the pulpit while sexually abusing child parishioners is such a common result of this that they should be instantly investigated. If you pay attention to modern Republican bills, they are always about taking rights away from people so that they can be abused, whether by the police, the corporations, or private businesses. Conservatives aren’t angry with their own for abusing kids, they are angry at them for getting caught abusing kids. They don’t think being racist is wrong, but being labeled as a racist makes the person throwing the label at them terrible. They aren’t upset at the behavior of their abusive leaders, just the possibility that their laundry will be aired. Although the person always has a “change of heart” after being tempted by their victims/Satan and are returned to the fold. It’s all about maintaining the image of wholesomeness to them, and not the substance. Anyone who does appear as part of their tribe by appearance, words, and visible deeds, is protected by the group and they will go out of their way to help them. That’s what all of those clubs are about - they exchange contacts and contracts (often illegally). The churches have schools and groups to assimilate the kids into those groups. They do as much as possible to keep their people from interacting with outsiders. Anyone who is different is shunned and bullied into either closeting or leaving. And the verbal abuse goes on until people finally have to cut ties with their families and previous communities. And then they are smeared as the bad children. (Sorry for the long explanation, but I grew up around these people as an LGBT+ and neurodivergent person in a deeply red state. These are my family, neighbors, and previous coworkers.)

@Gustodon @ChristiJunior @Tweetfiction @thepurrspective @beardalaxy They are in pain because of society putting enormous pressure on them to conform to a pattern that doesn’t fit and treating them like shit. You are blaming the victims for their oppression here. When trans people are not just tolerated but accepted by a family member or close friend, those suicide numbers go way down. And even more when a community supports them. And they are generally very happy in the spaces where they feel comfortable to be themselves. As an openly queer small woman I am delighted to hang out with people where I can talk about myself and my interests freely. But put me in an environment where people are othering me, crowding me, and making nasty comments, and I’m miserable. (I live in a deep red state, there are plenty of people telling me I’m going to hell, and worse.) But going back in the closet isn’t an option, because pretending not to be fully myself is also terrible for my mental health.

@itnewsbot There has been a lot of work trying to get minorities and women into STEM, but very little to change STEM fields (and other male-dominated fields) to be less culturally bigoted. An hour or half-hour of diversity training is not nearly enough to stop the intense undermining and othering I’ve seen and experienced in those spaces. The elitist culture that has taken decades to build (often on the work of women and minorities who have had their credit stolen) can’t be fixed without a major rehabilitation effort. Just dropping women and minorities into bad situations sets them up to be forced to fail. You can’t stop workplace abuse by throwing more victims at abusers. And then blaming those people when they leave to end the torture is yet another round of victim blaming. It doesn’t matter how smart or talented someone is, when their coworkers are conspiring to shift most of their work and all blame to that person that person is either going to drop from the stress or leave. And the significant wage gaps supported by administrations and HR departments is certainly not helping. You can’t convince people they are equals when they aren’t getting equal pay and treatment from the company. If there aren’t open wage charts provided for each job, then I guarantee that women and minorities are getting offered lower pay than white men. Many coding jobs do not require lots of teamwork with hostile male colleagues and have more flexible work hours. Both of which are more attractive to women looking for second careers and less workplace harassment.

@restofworld Doctors are starting to learn the lessons that teachers learned years ago. Instead of being constantly available, make sure you can *only* see work messages during your chosen time periods. (There is plenty of literature on it because when educators have a problem, publishing is what they do.) Being constantly available will kill your physical and mental health. My physicians have online messaging systems through their app, but it is only staffed during office hours and by the nurses when they have the time to deal with it. The expectation is not instant responses, but you can pass information and get basic questions answered. Anything more complicated and they ask you to come in for a billable visit, which is reasonable. It’s all about managing boundaries and expectations.

@demvoter @gwaldby The tattoo artist should definitely be named and shamed. In the US you can report them to the Alliance of Professional Tattooists (APT) at https://safe-tattoos.com/For anybody out there who might have made a life mistake and realized it, a lot of tattoo arts will do a cover up of Nazi and White Supremacist symbols for free or low cost as a public service. They don’t want people to have to live with those when they’ve learned to be better. It’s good for the person and the tattoo industry in general to get rid of them. If you live in or can make a trip to Nuclear Ink in Omaha, Nebraska, USA - tell my friend Jesse that I sent you. He also does cool things like realistic nipple tattoos for women who have had breast cancer. And the studio is also a skate shop where he sells his work on boards. Jesse’s an all around good guy.https://nuclear-ink.com/

The people responsible for the wrong translation (they used gay instead of the original which was describing man-boy sex) have gone on record with an apology. Because of their contract, no changes could be made for 10 years. By that point the damage was done.

@TheMadPirate @joelle What an incredibly bad take. I expect society to be inclusive. The only accommodating that is required is to give us a fully equal playing field. And that requires people not to act with bigotry and hatred towards the entire LGBT+ community, whether they like how they look or who they love. It’s not hate I’m expressing, but resistance to those who have broken the social contract. It’s not okay to persecute people just because they are different. Rubbing people’s noses in that isn’t hate, it’s standing up for ourselves. It’s having boundaries and drawing a line. So I intend to make people who are **being bigots** actively uncomfortable with their own hatred. Whether that’s a t-shirt, a sign, and expression of love toward my fellow queer folk, kissing someone of the same sex, or or going arm and arm with my trans family and friends.#LGBTQIA#LGBT#OurExistinanceIsResistance#Pride

@joelle @EvilSandmich @TheMadPirate I’m getting a good start to Pride week already. The bigots are outing themselves. The LGBT+ community demanding our full rights as human beings to treated equally in society and under the law. That it’s too much for you and makes you resort to slurs says everything about ya’ll.I feel sorry for the people forced to interact with you. They deserve better.

@joelle @EvilSandmich @TheMadPirate You are far concerned about the label of bigot more than you are about presenting bigoted behavior for everyone to see.To deny people the same rights as you have in society and under the law *is bigotry.* Do I need to present you with a dictionary entry?!Providing gender affirming care and showing that happy and healthy LGBT+ people exist, to present ourselves in public in a way that matches our gender identity, and to support the groups that have supported us is BY NO SERIOUS DEFINITION grooming.Grooming is coercing children under your influence and control to have sex with you or someone of your choosing. You know, like church leaders and Republican politicians.

@joelle @TheMadPirate @EvilSandmich Y’all have confused queer people with your own leaders. No, I don’t call people bigots who disagree with me. I call people who are acting like bigots what they are. You don’t like it? Learn to think and act like a better person who doesn’t scapegoat others. People have to be taught to fear those different from them. You learned those lessons well.I’m leaving this thread not because you have a point worth making (bigots never do) but because it’s pointless to argue with people who don’t kick literal fucking Nazis out of their rallies and hold the same beliefs. You’ve all proved my point.
