@stux On the other hand, oil seeps from the seafloor occur naturally, are the largest source of oil entering the world ocean, amounting to around 5 million gallons a year, and have been happening for a very, very long time—and it's been mostly fine. WWII wrecks are probably not a huge incremental threat—and since we can't do anything about them anyway, I'm inclined to not stress too much about them.

@stux It was a reaction to the large number of left-wing media sites, including most of the largest (CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, the NYT, MSNBC, the Washington Post, LA Times, the AP, the BBC, HuffPo, BuzzFeed, and Vox all lean left) under-serving right-leaning news consumers. In America, at least, that's a large market, currently representing (per Gallup) about 47 percent of the population. That's a lot of consumers for an untapped market. Started with talk radio in the 90s, then Fox News in the late 90s, then exploded as the internet and blogs and social media lowered the barriers to entry.

@stux The current controversy is not over the diary itself, but a graphic novel adaptation containing sexually explicit content not included in the original book edited by Frank's father.Having been a teenager once, I suspect many 12-15 year olds have various thoughts that are not appropriate for reading aloud in a classroom.

@stux The idea behind tipping is that receiving payment is contingent on delivering service the customer believes worthy of a tip— it’s pay for performance. It’s similar in this way to a contingent sales commission, but with the customer as the arbiter of performance. The purpose would be subverted if the employer served as intermediary, since the customer would no longer have the option of withholding the payment.

@stux if customers habitually failed to tip anyone, I could see the point of eliminating tipping — but in the US at least, I don’t believe that’s the case. Personally, I tip 20 to 25% unless a server is either bad at their job AND doesn’t seem to be trying, or is unpleasant— but I definitely want the option for those (in my experience rare but not nonexistent) occasions.
