I have a local timeline, a public timeline, and “home” - I am struggling to understand the difference, but it seems like only “Home” shows me stuff from people I follow?

@james Cool. I like the idea. It’s hard not to try to fit this into my preconceived notions of the bird site’s behavior!

@james ok so now I’m on the iOS app and it has “mastodon”, “community” and “for you”. I guess that’s Home, Local, and ??(BTW, thanks for helping me :)

How often do you update your Ruby Gem dependencies?

I'm having trouble being followed by and following @jgarber@mastodon.cc - can't locate him via search. Server doesn't seem to be blocked by ruby.social Anyone else have issues? Part of me posting this is to put his handle into a toot to see if I can then click it :)

One thing I'm not sure how to deal with is threads. I posted a couple of threads on twitter that I would love to mirror here (or post here and mirror back there), but it's not clear how to do that and have them both be threads on both services.

@james I think I could handle interacting on both but creating a platform-appropriate post on both is trickier. I may try to just hand-jam my thread on twitter here and see what it's like. Maybe double work on occasion is OK?

@james I’ve been trying to follow myself on pixelfed.social, but it doesn’t seem to be working and not sure how to debug. Is this a thing where a masto server can’t have its members follow a pixelfed server (I think pixelfed is activitypub but not mastodon?)

@james Likely that’s it - I guess you are confirming that in theory it should work, but could just be slow due to demand/traffic?

@james @rbates @solnic Happy to slide in here with a ridiculous suggestion for the syntax:https://gist.github.com/davetron5000/cd6bc04a059ab6141533e1a8f415d75a

Anyone ever set a global variable in a RSpec test and then use that to conditionally debug stuff in the code under test? Just me?

@MichaelT This is more like if you have a codepath that will be executed multiple times, but only want to e.g. puts debug during one execution, you do:def test_thing some_setup $debug = true call_the_code assert whateverendafter { $debug = false }def call_the_code some_setup some_other_codeenddef some_setup puts "HERE" if $debugend

Never ask a lawyer if it's OK to do something (it's always "no"). Ask them to explain the risks in doing so.Never ask a programmer if something is possible (it's always "yes"). Ask them to explain what is involved doing something.Never ask a doctor if something will make you better (it's always "maybe"). Ask them to explain the conditions under which a treatment/procedure will work and what could go wrong.

Same goes for security team. They will always say no it's not safe, so you have to ask what are the risks (because the only way to be sure is nuke all computers from orbit [which, TBH, would probably increase quality of life for everyone on the planet, at least for a while ])

Never used GH actions but this blog post[1] on their issues mirrors my experience with CircleCI and Codeship. These are expensive, complicated, poorly designed wrappers around running some scripts. 5 years ago, this was useful but I wonder now with container-based cloud services if it could be easier to roll your own?[1] https://felix-knorr.net/posts/2023-11-11-github-actions.html

@foone How are you able to take staff AWAY from ewaste? Where I live that is not allowed and the assumption in dropping stuff off is that it goes to be destroyed. If it's known that dropping stuff at ewaste means citizens could reclaim it, then your story is even more horrifying
