Quick solo trip out to the post office with just an envelope = rare chance for #longboarding instead of #cycling. Something I really miss since we moved to #Cheltenham - even though the distances are generally less than Derby, the combination of fewer trips without kids/cargo and generally more rubbishy surfaces tends to lead to "just take a bike".

Got me thinking...If you recalibrate what I just said from "physically fit dude who hates cars and likes human-powered wheely pursuits" to "typical person" you arrive at:"I'd love to cycle but <reasons> so I end up taking the car".

Now we know there is a problem with over-representation of fit, sport-enthusiast, dudely types in #ActiveTravel campaigning and local authority decision-making.We also know you can actually get a fair amount of cycling under pretty crappy non-inclusive conditions, for various reasons:- said dudely types also exist in wider society- cycles are (for many people) pretty capable over bad surfaces.- patchy networks of safe infrastructure can hit the "tolerable" hurdle for many peopleetc.

Led me to wonder if things like skateboarding/rollerskating/blading make a much better indicator species for #inclusive #urbanism than cycling and/or if we need some sort of resurgence that gets all the dudely types hooked on those things.Because all the stuff - wonky slabs, missing or badly installed drop kerbs, rough tarmac, steps, steep ramps, etc - which are horrible for eg wheelchair or handcycle users suddenly become an issue. As does "just hop on the road past this bit".

Minor acts of tech rebellion:Stealth deploying #Deltachat to friends via our kids."Yeah we've started using this recently because it's safe and private enough that I'm comfortable with the kids having their own profiles on their own devices""Do you want to set it up on your phone and pair with me so you can see how it works?"<under my breath>"Yeah btw this is how I'm going to message you from now on instead of WhatsApp"
