@aral thanks for providing this service; there are so many asking for help out there and it's difficult to know who's real and who's a scammer taking advantage of a horrible situation

time sensitive: the Pacific Crest Trail (and indeed, all our national parks and wild lands) needs your help. There's proposed rulemaking at the US Forest Service that could introduce roads and development into currently roadless areas, making wild lands less wild and irrevocably changing the character of some of the most pristine wilderness in our nation. And the driver behind this? Increased access on public lands for logging, mining, and petroleum extraction. Please post your public comments at regulations.gov and help us keep pristine forests pristine. https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/08/29/2025-16581/special-areas-roadless-area-conservation-national-forest-system-lands#open-comment/cc @ai6yr @W6KME @andrewbriscoe @killyourfm @jds and my other hiking/outdoors friends

“We construct a task for which the most space-efficient classical algorithm provably requires between 62 and 382 bits of memory, and solve it using only 12 qubits. Our result provides the most direct evidence yet that currently existing #quantum processors can generate and manipulate entangled states of sufficient complexity to access the exponentiality of Hilbert space. This form of quantum advantage — which we call quantum information supremacy — represents a new benchmark in quantum computing, one that does not rely on unproven conjectures.”Nice work by Scott Aaronson and team https://scottaaronson.blog/?p=9138

however, the most interesting part of that post may have been the unrelated side note about the rise of “Conspiracy Physics” (and what I see as contrarianism for its own sake):"This resentment of scientific authority figures is the major attraction of what might be called “conspiracy physics.” Most fringe theories are too arcane for listeners to understand, but anyone can grasp the idea that academic physics is just one more corrupt and self-serving establishment. The German physicist Sabine Hossenfelder has attracted 1.72 million YouTube subscribers in part by attacking her colleagues: “Your problem is that you’re lying to the people who pay you,” she declared. “Your problem is that you’re cowards without a shred of scientific integrity.”In this corner of the internet, the scientist Scott Aaronson has written, “Anyone perceived as the ‘mainstream establishment’ faces a near-insurmountable burden of proof, while anyone perceived as ‘renegade’ wins by default if they identify any hole whatsoever in mainstream understanding.””

Being a contrarian doesn't make you smarter any more than being a cynic makes you smarter. It just makes you more obnoxious to be around.

@snarkweek I like Sabine too, but I also think she tends towards contrarianism for its own sake (it's become part of the brand)

@tomjennings @nina_kali_nina the last laptop I had that felt exotic was either my first black MacBook, or the 10" Sony VAIO I had back in about 2000. I still like new gear, but I'm too familiar with it now.

@ricci I have several cats; one of them only chews on plastic bags and does so at every opportunity. Another only chews on cardboard, and again misses no chance to do so.why

@prettygood @da_667 *nod* good people don't ever want to punch down, but sometimes we make mistakes and our frustration shows. Owning up to it, apologizing and being transparent, really earns trust (sometimes more than if you hadn't goofed up in the first place)

@aral we seem absolutely intent on shooting ourselves in the foot, repeatedly, or at least electing people who will do that for us while blaming immigrants.

@paul @rl_dane password restrictions are my favorite irritating code smell. They always indicate somebody is doing something wrong on the backend.
