first experience really using chatGPT to write some code examples for us. were having trouble seeing how a combination of two libraries might work togetherit just made up a ton of shit that was exactly what we wanted lol. i told my coworker 'lets look at the docs to see what other arguments these functions take' and instead of doing that we rewrote the GPT example for 20 minutes before discovering the functions do not actually exist at all

@liaizon i wonder how bad security is getting actually? like these companies go and add 2 factor for *some* reason. but that reason could be: 'other companies in the industry are doing it, and our regular security sucks so we should do this to fix our security'? or is actually motivated by some real metric that an exec can understand and make a decision about?

the thing that is always revelatory for me about the fediverse is that the fundamental thing (federation) actually just works? yes there are many many issues with the way applications integrate with each other.but doing the hello world example for the fedify library, running a tunnel so my local code is reachable over a domain and seeing the actor show up in any random fediverse server is like magic. you'd think this is the part that would take 15 years to build, not the UI on top

@tomjennings search is failing me but someone around 1900~ designed an electric organ music distribution system. the idea was like a player piano but for early electric organ (synthesizer) which would blast the voltage down wires run out to individual houses, and the thing would play on rotation 24/7 like what radio became. i believe they even built this out in a small area in one city but no one liked it because it sounded like you can imagine

@tomjennings have this all the time with my password manager (i use lastpass cuz im an idiot apparently) and firefox, lastpass and the javascript in the form of the site all fight each other for who gets to deny me access to my own information 🤬
