genuinely part of the reason I think you should learn how to pirate media (especially tv and movies) is that the vast majority of tv/film is being made by companies who you probably shouldn't be giving money to anyway. You should always support, ideally financially, independent creators though. It's usually not hard to do both of these things at the same time

to put it another way: it's a lot easier to "boycott Disney+" if you weren't giving money to it in the first place and just pirating content whenever you wanted to

RE: https://mastodon.social/@mcc/116002605778465161crazy to me that there are people in the comments to this saying "well open source software doesn't outlast closed either". It does! the whole point is that if you have the source code, you can compile the software yourself and run it in an environment that it was built for. Software doesn't "go bad", the environment around it changes and thus it needs to be updated -- but that doesn't change the underlying point which is if the software is controlled by a larger entity, it CAN "go bad"

i'm not even a massive FOSS devotee (i am typing this on a win10 computer) but this is basic shit. The way that people -- particularly younger generations unforch -- have grown to understand software as a dependent/online *suite* of applications that are constantly phoning home for god-knows-what is so frustrating. you can have programs that just run locally! you don't even HAVE to update them!

i am mixed on the entire output of Red Clarion but they hit more often than not, and this bit from a recent piece has been rattling around in my head a lot lately given the upcoming No Kings "protests" https://clarion.unity-struggle-unity.org/2026-03-26-a-rethinking-of-everything-altogether/?_thumbnail_id=4519

protest movements in the usa often feel exactly like this -- pantomimes of what a protest "should" look like or feel like, little thought given to an analysis of power. what is being gained? what is being lost (e.g. through burnout, exhaustion, frustration)?

what about propping up electoral candidates and pouring energy into their campaigns only for them to be absorbed into the DNC apparatus, inevitably letting down constituents because *their interests do not align*? these feel like outgrowths of the same root error -- a lack of actual analysis of How To Change Things

this exact sort of mismatch -- between goals and slogans -- imo creates a very pernicious sort of psychological wearing-down. It's stressful on a person to hold contradictory ideas in your head at once! i feel like this is talked about more often in the context of workplace burnout but this part made me realize it can also show up in organizing/activist spaces.
