Cyber criminals are losing millions of dollars to other cyber criminals after themselves falling victim to scams on dark web forums, according to new analysis by @SophosXOps But this isn't just an opportunity to enjoy schadenfreude at the expense of online scammers and other cyber criminals, it's a chance to gain insight into how cyber criminals work, providing intelligence on what attacks are being employed and how to stop them. "Because forum rules demand proof to support scam allegations, wronged threat actors will often happily post screenshots of private conversations and source code, identifiers, transactions, chat logs, and blow-by-blow accounts of negotiations, sales, and troubleshooting," said Matt Wixey, senior threat researcher at Sophos.(Side note: I was looking forward to going to this talk at Black Hat Europe, but yesterday's panic attack about attending a con meant that didn't happen - shame, because the paper is really interesting!)https://www.zdnet.com/article/cyber-scammers-are-scamming-each-other-and-revealing-dark-web-secrets-along-the-way/

Just seen a 'journalists are bad and should feel bad' style post on here for the first time.I guess some negative things have carried over from the other place. π¬βIt's fascinating to me how the public perspective of who a journalist is and what they do is so out of sync with what actually happens.Do people look at high salary TV news anchors or newspaper editors and think that anyone who is a journalist or reporter is part of some elite club, when for most, the industry is notorious for being underpaid?Because I can tell you, when I was in my first job on 15k a year and permanently in my overdraft, I definitely wasn't feeling elite!

@zleap While a good idea in theory, on the low level shadowing thing, that kind of leaves journalism only open to people who can afford to take the hit of not earning for a long time - in an industry that at at least when it comes to the mainstream and national press already has an issue with feeling like it's only accessible to posh people! I prefer taking the time out to write in-depth, well-researched features, they're my favorite thing to write!

@HauntedOwlbear @zleap I honestly don't know how I would have got started down this career path if I was doing it now.And even in 2023, it's not unusual to see job postings which want 'experienced' journalists for roles in London which barely scrape over 20k.When I was on 25k in London 10 years ago it was a struggle, let alone how it would be now on even less.

Twitter insiders have told the BBC that the company is no longer able to protect users from trolling, state-co-ordinated disinformation and child sexual exploitation, following lay-offs and changes under owner Elon Musk.Exclusive academic data plus testimony from Twitter users backs up their allegations, suggesting hate is thriving under Mr Musk's leadership, with trolls emboldened, harassment intensifying and a spike in accounts following misogynistic and abusive profiles. Current and former employees of the company tell BBC Panorama that features intended to protect Twitter users from trolling and harassment are proving difficult to maintain, amid what they describe as a chaotic working environment in which Mr Musk is shadowed by bodyguards at all times.-lol after sharing this link on the bird site I started receiving abuse because I'm a journalist within minutes. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-64804007

Twitter/Musk didn't respond to any approached from the BBC's Marianna Spring for comment. But he's responded to one of his cabal of most interacted with random Twitter Blue users sharing it with disparaging comments to the reporter with... "Literally roflmao"π«₯https://twitter.com/mariannaspring/status/1632650024562708481?t=i9fgliG7uNBcSfHlBQo0wQ&s=19

Sorry to keep plugging it, but here's my in-depth feature on artificial intelligence, security and the race to protect the algorithms which power #AI from manipulation and other malicious attacks. After months of work, this was published a couple of weeks ago. I'm glad that it finally got out there for people to read. The subject could potentially be classed as incredibly apt (apt!) given some of the news in recent days.It took a lot of work, and I got to speak a lot of very interesting people who told me their stories - so getting as many eyes on it as possible would be lovely.https://www.zdnet.com/in-depth/innovation/these-experts-are-racing-to-protect-ai-from-hackers-time-is-running-out/

I'm usually at the office on a Tuesday but I've opted to stay home today because my asthma was playing up through the night and into the morning and a) I don't feel good b) I'm running on fumes. Now, hoping my colleagues at what's still a relatively new job and career path for me don't see me as slacking off because of this. π¬β

My FOMO about not being at Black Hat/Defon last week has definitely been dampened by the number of photos of positive covid tests I'm seeing in the aftermath. Some people from my office went, but I haven't been in this week due to the 'ol asthma playing up. Which probably especially emphasizes why it's better for me to remain isolated and weird. π
β(Also, having worked from home in my previous job since 2020, I the days I have to work in an office to be very overstimulating and distracting!)

Well, it's certainly something that's worse than just asthma, but according to tests, it isn't the Big C.I still feel rubbish though. Obviously I am staying at home, but in an ideal world I'd also be laying in bed rather than trying to work towards some big deadlines that I have this week and I don't think I've been there long enough to just drop out of them.π₯Ίβ

@PhilGastwirth I really enjoyed the first season. And yes, a lot of it felt like Doctor Who if it had a much bigger budget and was focused around Gallifrey. πβ

Europol says an international law enforcement operation has apprehended key figures in Ukraine thought to be behind several high-profile #ransomware attacks which cost victims hundreds of millions of Euros - including deployments of LockerGoga, MegaCortex, HIVE and Dharma ransomware campaigns.-"Those responsible for breaking into networks did so through techniques including brute force attacks, SQL injections and sending phishing emails with malicious attachments in order to steal usernames and passwords."Once inside the networks, the attackers remained undetected and gained additional access using tools including TrickBot malware, Cobalt Strike and PowerShell Empire, in order to compromise as many systems as possible before triggering ransomware attacks.https://www.europol.europa.eu/media-press/newsroom/news/international-collaboration-leads-to-dismantlement-of-ransomware-group-in-ukraine-amidst-ongoing-war

This cat just stood on what turns out to be a poorly placed power button on top of my PC, turning the machine off... and deleting a whole bunch of interview quotes I'd spent the last two hours transcribing in the process. No, I don't know why I hadn't clicked save in that time either. Regularly backup your data, kids!
