If Star Trek is to be believed, we’ve got some really turbulent times in the next few years.In 2024 specifically, in the US, we’re going to see California erupt into The Bell Riots: a class struggle resulting from government housing for the unemployed become effectively forced imprisonment for the poor.That same year, the British Isles will be in upheaval when the IRA’s terrorist efforts are successful, resulting in The Irish Reunification of 2024. Dissatisfaction with Brexit in Northern Ireland could certainly push that along.I wonder what other political upheavals we’ll see leading up to that time? #StarTrek #FutureHistory @StarTrek

@kevYou should reconsider not getting the flu shot. I used to think only old folks or people with weak immune systems needed it.Until, at age 26, I got a whopper of a flu that put me out for about a week. I couldn't eat for several days. I had a terrible fever for a few days. For about a day or so, I had bouts of hallucinations. I even had temporary amnesia for about six hours (side effect of the fever, I suppose). @mikeI've been pretty shocked by a lot of the cavalier attitudes towards the pandemic I've seen in my family as well.My uncle died from COVID-19 before any vaccine was available. Even still, my aunt, his sister-in-law, who is a nurse, posts anti-vax and anti-mask stuff on Facebook.My brother posts memes making fun of people "still playing COVID".My sister, a pediatrician, only got vaccinated because she was traveling overseas for a funeral.My wife and I and our kids are the few people in our family who have been social distancing, masking when around others, and getting the vaccine. We also haven't caught COVID, while so many others in our family have.But my kindergartner son is finally back in in-person school, and he's the only person in his class (including the teacher) wearing a mask, so it's hard for him to resist peer pressure.And when my sister, a pediatrician, and her husband, a pulmonologist, act like it's no big deal, when it killed our uncle, it definitely makes me feel like I'm the crazy one sometimes.@kev

@abloo but WebM isn’t an encoding, it’s just a container. And as a container, it’s essentially a subset of mkv.If you’ve got a video with appropriate codecs already, putting it in a WebM should be trivial and very quick.ffmpef -i input.mkv -c copy output.webmThat should be very quick.Of course, if either of the codecs used in the file aren’t supported by WebM, that’s a different matter entirely.

@alexandraOne of my previous jobs had some poorly written feature tests that were quite brittle. They would randomly break for no particular reason.Instead of taking the time to fix them, it was decided they'd just build in a retry function, so the test would only fail if it failed like five times in a row.

@amolith I used to do this for a living.I built a cloud based document management system that would take scanned pages, OCR them, and store them as PDFs.We used Google Cloud Vision, which was overkill, but my CEO had a hard-on for Google.Tesseract should be all you need: https://guides.library.illinois.edu/c.php?g=347520&p=4121426Although, may I suggest using DjVu instead of PDF. DjVu is a better archival format. It’s much simpler usually results on smaller fine sizes. Many PDF viewers already support it. But I don’t know exactly what your use case is, so that may not be an option
