I don’t know about you, but I am ready to come out of my crouch position.I am ready to start imagining tomorrow again.Since Ferguson, the range of my willingness to imagine the future seemed to shrink year by year. By 2017, I couldn’t bear to look forward beyond a handful of years. By 2020 even that felt like an extravagance. But there’s a liberation to setting “normal” into the water and letting it sink like a weight.

Normal is dead. Our social order saw the requirements of surviving a respiratory virus pandemic and gave up. Four years on there’s an endless parade of “mystery illness.” Spoiler: it’s just the original illness, and a pile of opportunistic infection enjoying shattered immune response. We gotta take care of each other. The systems aren’t going to do it by default. There’s what we can organize ourselves to handle, there’s what we can pressure the systems to provide. We gotta imagine that work

AI haters can feel how they need to feel, but I spent the day prototyping the most complex web thing I have ever builtand despite the brain fog, limited energy and low motivation endemic to this time of year...it's WORKINGOne of my biggest technical questions is already de-risked, and from this foundation I can iterate and clarify the product visionAn #LLM is a neuroprosthesis.

@mhoye a question that’s been burbling since I read this last night:How far outside the scope of possible is community-led development of a browser? Can the next chapter of the web have a viable, feature-complete browser for the people and by the people, or is that too complex an endeavor without a serious payroll?

We need to bring back skeuomorphic UI design. So twice a month I hang out at my library and give people technology help. Back in 2021 I went down there and said to the administrator "hey do you want this?" And they did, so I've been doing it ever since. What surprised me is that ALL OF MY TAKERS in all this time?Senior citizens. And they are absolutely baffled by modern software. In more ways than one. But flat UI is a big one. This is a #DigitalDivide issue I don't see discussed at all.

I went viral in ‘22 about this work: how financial incentives were poisoning the digital experience for seniorsBut culture is also part of the equation here. We've got a bunch of tech people who don't really interact outside of their social circles. And for more than a decade we've been iterating into flatter, plainer, more abstract controls. And it’s making it so hard for the seniors I work with even to INTUIT what is and is not a control.https://nitter.net/_danilo/status/1583169632516509697

my thermonuclear take is that the issue here isn’t whether it matters that we call AI “AI”but that Mastodon’s culture is poorly socialized and people here have a hard time doing constructive conversationThis is frequently lamented as “replyguyism,” but I think that’s imprecise. Something happened along the way to mislead people here that derailing the conversation makes friendshttps://simonwillison.net/2024/Jan/7/call-it-ai/

The way to make friends on the internet is, in the words of Twitter viral dude visakanv, to support the OPWhich is not to say be a sycophant. Sometimes entertaining a bid means to take it seriously enough to disagree. But to do so in a way that PASSES THE VIBE CHECK is what matters.something happened to the culture here that just lobotomized any ability to read vibes lmao

it’s funny because this is even baked into the product identitiesTwitter at its best was a harmonious jam session of the mind. When it worked, it was jazz. To be sure, it was also among the most dramatic PvP platforms in internet historyMastodon is much more people bleating a horn in your ear at max volume.Going viral on Twitter inspired anxiety over context collapse.Going viral here is the dread of “good lord am I going to be exposed to truly socially awkward shit for the next day”

Bingo@siderea nails it in this threadWhat I would add is that, to my digital social mores, and to common sense, my finite cognitive bandwidth is ipso facto MY space, and anyone who is boorish in occupying it earns anything from an eye roll to outright loathingAND THAT IS AS IT SHOULD BEhttps://universeodon.com/@siderea/111712696674235908

@lispi314 thank you, this is such a common format for failing the vibe check that I can automatically filter it in the futureFolks can speak their minds on their own TL. Part of social skill is knowing when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em

So this Rabbit R1 thing strikes me as the worst of all worldsIt’s going to generate proprietary e-waste while fully delegating its AI functions to a cloud service, with a dubious security modelIt seems needlessly wasteful, even as it’s clear someone is going to sell exactly these functions, somedayhttps://www.theverge.com/2024/1/9/24030667/rabbit-r1-ai-action-model-price-release-date

Good lord. Here’s another one. It’s an “#AI voice recorder” that’s just… sending your shit to OpenAI againYou don’t need dedicated hardware for this! Where are people getting the VC to make all this junk? It’s hardware with an app that uploads to the cloud. The phone already has hardware that can do this. CES is going to give me an ulcer this year. https://www.plaud.ai

@clive it’s exactly ass-around to meI think the strategy would be to pour every resource into an EXTRAORDINARY app that successfully does these things, get people really invested in it, and THEN drop hardware that is perfectly tailored to the needs of those usersbut no one asked me

The velocity tradeoff of having an LLM write code for you is that, past a certain level of complexity, you INSTANTLY have no idea what it does, as opposed to the steady context decay of code you write yourselfhttps://cute.is/@keith/112197120069316165

@Sevoris I couldn’t have achieved a third of what I have over the last year without the support of an LLM, so I don't think it’s quite that cut-and-dryStill, it's important to be clear on the costs and tradeoffs, and right now that is NOT happening
