Dear #queer and #trans friends of the fediverse, I've got a question which came up today concerning the English language. If a company is offering a product which offers ergonomic properties specific to hip bone and genitalia anatomy, which word would you prefer in this context: "gender" or "sex"?Like in the sentence "We offer product a, or product b (depending on sex/gender)."

I recently got called by a scammer, who pretended to be microsoft and told me I had problems with my computer. I thought "oh, this is going to be fun", since I am usually the person who gets called, when others have trouble with their computer and I don't use any microsoft software at home. But their connection was bad and I couldn't understand them very good, so I hung up and their number is blocked now. I still wonder what might have happened, if I talked to them more, but not enough to unblock them.

@fedibikes I had an awesome work day. Three coworkers told me, that I had a flat front tire on my bicycle. The first one told me where to ask for a patch kit and while I was fixing it, our boss asked, if i had found something to fix it.Afterwards i had a total blast riding through heavy rain with water splashing all around.I was totally soaked when i arrived at home, but it was lots of fun. 🚲😄🌧️

@thealexstewartUse gitea, if you want to self-host, use codeberg, if you want someone else to host for you.Or sourcehut, if you want to be a paying customer and like git-email.The one discerning thing a big service like github or gitlab have going for them is project visibility. I am really interested, how things will be able to change, once federation gets finished in gitea, since I hope I'll be able to discover all the cool projects on the other gitea instances. 🙂@tallship

@EU_Commission I've got a great idea: let's outlaw IPv4 on the internet in the EU, so people finally get their shit together and we can transition to IPv6.Why?- we are out of IPv4 addresses- many people in the third world have only access to IPv6- accessing important sites like github requires IPv4, so they have to depend on workarounds.Offer equality for everyone, abandon IPv4, because the megacorporations are apparently incapable to do this on their own.#IPv6 #EU

@FinalOverdrive @kvuzet XMPP is still alive though. Conversations, the popular client on android is pretty nice, as well as @dino, the Linux desktop client. I recently was at my PC, when someone called me via XMPP and I could choose, whether to accept the video call on my PC or my smartphone. I am extremely satisfied with this current state of the XMPP ecosystem and the possibilities of self-hosting.#xmpp #dino #conversations

@dekkzz76 @lispi314 XMPP is not the most popular protocol, but it is far from dead. We've got- people making a living with XMPP development- recent new client and server software (dino / snikket)- new features (a/v calls)- upcoming features (emoji reactions, implemented in dino, coming soon to conversations)- XMPP as a part of popular software stacks (yunohost, jitsi meet)Of all the technologies is use to keep up with friends and family, XMPP is the one I use the most. Them being: XMPP, briar, IRC, email, SMS, phone.#xmpp #conversations #dino #snikket

@dekkzz76 @lispi314 > Briar is a messaging app designed for activists, journalists, and anyone else who needs a safe, easy and robust way to communicate. Unlike traditional messaging apps, Briar doesn’t rely on a central server - messages are synchronized directly between the users’ devices. If the internet’s down, Briar can sync via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, keeping the information flowing in a crisis. If the internet’s up, Briar can sync via the Tor network, protecting users and their relationships from surveillance.https://briarproject.org/how-it-works/I use it with very nerdy, privacy-focused friends.

@dekkzz76 @lispi314 Briar is very nice, if you worry about one of the big downsides of XMPP: leaking metadata.Even if you control the XMPP server yourself, just watching the network will allow attackers to deduct who is communicating with whom.If this is a greater concern to you, than being able to do a/v calls and receiving offline messages, #briar is a great tool.
