@lauren I use one to view my security cameras when away from home. I don't trust anything security-related that's directly exposed to the internet. The cameras are on their own separate VLAN that's isolated from everything except my Blue Iris server.

@mjg59 Ecobee allows local access via HomeKit. You don't actually need any Apple devices to use its HomeKit integration; Home Assistant implements the HomeKit protocol and can natively communicate with HomeKit devices.

@mjg59 the HomeKit one or the Ecobee one?

@ironicbadger I just listened to the latest Self-Hosted where you spoke about VPS providers. Some of the providers on LowEndTalk are legit companies! I'd recommend taking a look at GreenCloudVPS https://greencloudvps.com/billing/store/budget-kvm-sale and HostHatch https://hosthatch.com/products. Both have fantastic Black Friday sales too. I've got a VPS with 16GB RAM for $60/year. RackNerd is decent too https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/191501/real-deals-here-win-big-with-thousands-in-prizes-racknerds-new-year-offers-new-year-2024/p1

@ironicbadger A lot of the good VPS providers also let you upload an ISO and connect via VNC to install the OS (HostHatch allows this, not sure about the others). A lot nicer than Hetzner's thing.

OpenWrt is awesome and underrated.I'm running it in a VM on a Core i5-9500 and an old Intel X540-T2 NIC, with a mostly out-of-the-box config, and it uses barely any CPU when routing ~8Gbps of traffic.

7.5Gbps throughput through a *single connection* using iperf3. I don't think that's even possible on a BSD-based router (like opnsense or pfsense) regardless of how much tweaking you do.

Why do car manufacturers feel the need to put so many gimmicks in their electric cars? I don't want all controls to be in a touch screen interface, or for it to look like a futuristic thing, or brake lights that don't look like brake lights, or doors you can open by tapping your phone to it, or any of that other stuff.

I currently drive a 2012 Mazda 3 and upgraded the radio to one that supports Android Auto. I want that, but with an electric engine. A fully-electric Mazda3, Accord, Camry, whatever. Something that looks like a normal petrol car inside and out. No touchscreen. Knobs for AC. Why is that so hard?

Yesterday, I was trying to figure out what all the circuit breakers at my house do, since a lot of them are labelled incorrectly. I'm not sure what's more amusing: The fact that none of the *three* labelled "dishwasher" actually go to the dishwasher, or the fact that the one simply labelled "kitchen plugs" seems to power half the house.

I fixed it πŸ™‚It's strange... A single 20A breaker powers 2 of the bedrooms, the living room, and the backyard outlets/lights. Seems like a lot for one breaker. On the other hand, a different 20A breaker only powers 4 outlets in the dining room, which in reality are never going to hit anywhere near that amount of current. There's also a separate 15A breaker for some LED lights in the kitchen that only pull ~100W (0.83A) when they're on πŸ€”

The new Outlook on Windows is literally just a Chrome web view. I can't even open it when I'm offline and the entire UI is non-native and looks out of place. What is it with native apps all just becoming web browsers? At this rate, by 2030 all apps will just be Electron / Chrome web views.

Developers: Content designer? We don't need one of those! Also developers: "Provide a boolean for whether the feedback affirms the predicted result" is a perfectly acceptable error message.

@sun Config should be in $XDG_CONFIG_HOME (~/.config) and user data should be in $XDG_DATA_HOME (~/.local/share)

@sun You can use https://github.com/b3nj5m1n/xdg-ninja to fix some Linux apps that don't put their stuff in the right place, usually via environment variables.

@mischievoustomato @sun If you don't like the standard freedesktop/XDG directories, you can change $XDG_CONFIG_HOME and $XDG_PATH_HOME to whatever directories you want.
