@stux One time I managed to put a detached bike chain back on while riding the bike, but I still didn't feel as cool as this driver should. 😮

I bought @ZachWeinersmith 's Bea Wolf for my kids (9 and 6, the elder of them already a fan of Beowulf). It arrived today, but neither of them have had a chance to because I wouldn't put it down.My favourite bit is when Bea and her entourage arrive near Treeheart and the shield-bearer who greets them says "Your leader sparkles with power and also with sparkles." The line's brilliant, clever, and accompanies the most badass illustration.I'll give it to my kids... eventually. But if you're looking for a book recommendation in the meantime, this is it.#Books #ChildrensBooks

@stavvers voted "fruity", because they both seem pretty homophobic to me but "fruity" was almost-*intentionally* homophobic whereas "fruitless" is merely *neglectfully* homophobic.

How did I never think of accessing Gemini (the protocol) on my Gemini (portable computer) before today?Of course, I recently rehomed my Gemini so instead I had to access Gemini on my Cosmo (Gemini's successor), which isn't nearly as cool.** Still pretty cool though. Reminds me of using Lynx on my Psion 5mx last millenium...#gemini #geminiprotocol #geminispace

Finally fully grok hash length extension/padding attacks. So I wrote a play-along guide, in case it helps others get their head around this gnarly cybersecurity concept:https://danq.me/2023/11/30/length-extension-attack/#cyber #security #hash #hacking

Also: made a video explaining it all, including a demo of exploiting an SHA-1 length extension attack to inject parameters into a hash-protected URL:https://danq.me/2023/11/30/length-extension-attack-video#cyber #security #hash #hacking

British Gas's programmers don't believe that a surname can be only a single character.Their customer service agents worked around this by adding a parenthetical note to my record. The result is hilarious postal mail that tries to reassure me that my surname really is what it is:

I'm ignoring for the moment the fact that they're also using the wrong title for me, despite having been corrected on a previous occasion.

@simonzerafa Long version: https://danq.me/qtl;dr version: back in 2007 my then-partner (@esk) and I - who'd not wanted to marry but who wanted the same surname for a while but been too indecisive to choose one - decided to cut the choices down by selecting a single-character name. We later broke up and they married (and changed their name) but I'm quite attached to mine so I kept it.Fun bonus fact: approximately since my name change I've run https://freedeedpoll.org.uk to help British citizens change their names for free without a solicitor.

@penguin42 @simonzerafa @esk Yes, mononyms are technically acceptable. You can't register a birth (in the UK) with one, but you can change your name to one. I didn't know that in 2007, when I wrote that post.Note that many government databases including the Passport Office don't fully accept that, though (they, for example, will record your mononym as your first name and "XXX" as your surname).

@hj Folks have sometimes asked me - and which they choose says quite a lot about them, I find - "Q? Is that like Q from Star Trek, or Q from James Bond?"My response: "No, it's like Q, the set of all rational numbers."Source: https://danq.me/q

@interfluidity True, although they might also be unwittingly be running any other variety of spyware too.Obviously I don't want to downplay what a big deal it is that Microsoft are aiming to become the authors of the most widely-distributed piece of spyware in the world.Merely wanted to observe that Microsoft didn't invent spyware. They just came up with a way to slap an AI sticker on it and market it as a feature.

My thoughts on #WPEngine and the recent #WordPress drama -1. WP Engine certainly act in ways that are unethical and antithetical to the spirit of open source2. @photomatt calling them out at #WCUS2024 muddied the waters between ethical, moral, and legal issues, and probably didn't get his point across as well as he'd have liked3. I'm not qualified to comment on the legal merits of the trademark case, but I've certainly witnessed people be confused by WP Engine's marketingDisclaimer: I'm an @automattic employee; but these are my personal opinions.🔗 Full thoughts: https://danq.me/wp-engine

@foone The computers at the passport office of my country permit a single character surname. The computers at the border control do not. You can imagine all the fun that causes me when I return home from a trip elsewhere.Nowhere in the world have I experienced so many obstacles and interrogations as I have trying to re-enter the country where I was born and have lived my entire life.

Apparently Automattic are laying off around one in six of their workforce. And I'm one of the unlucky ones.Anybody remote hiring for a UK-based full-stack web developer (in a world that doesn't seem to believe that full-stack developers exist anymore) with 25+ years professional experience, specialising in PHP, Ruby, JS, HTML, CSS, devops, and about 50% of CMSes you've ever heard of (and probably some you haven't)... with a flair for security, accessibility, standards-compliance, performance, and DexEx?CV at: https://danq.me/cv/index.html#note #work #automattic #job #memorable #employmentVia: 🔗 https://danq.me/2025/04/02/redundant/
