@nina_kali_nina I've been using #XMPP for the last year or so, wondering if the halcyon ICQ days of yore are still to be had.After testing it with several friends connecting to my own self-hosted #Prosody server, here's what I found:- Yes it all works, on all XMPP clients. But MacOS/iPadOS/iOS clients are not all that mature at this time. The #Linux (#Gajim, despite no video or audio calls) and #Android (#Conversations) XMPP clients are the best, IMHO. Always favor those, I say, and they are confidently installable and reliable today.- Yes, use OMEMO encryption on personal chats. But when it comes to group chats, OMEMO is not necessarily the right move.- If you don't need privacy in an XMPP group, then don't create a private group, but rather a _public_ group (the safer choice for reliability of message delivery). No OMEMO is possible in a public group, and the messages propagating around will be reliable, even to clients who vanish and re-appear after prolonged absences.- If you really need OMEMO encryption in a group chat, create a _private_ group, not a public group. **Clients who vanish from the group for prolonged periods may miss out on some of the messages when they return (say, a few weeks later)**.- I kept a wiki with several more quirks noted, which came up, and felt confusing and frustrating to my (non-geek) friends using XMPP.As to your Apple-ecosystem-confined friends, at this moment in time, maybe talk to them 1:1 in #Fluffychat/Matrix, which affords encryption, and is all #OpenSource, like everything above. (Groups in #Matrix have a track record of failing for everybody in them very badly every 2 or 3 years or so.)

@nina_kali_nina Also FYI: you can set a custom status in #Fluffychat as well. In the search bar in the upper left, click your own avatar. A menu pops out. "set status" is there. You get to set a custom one, up to 500 chars.#Matrix #OpenSource

@nina_kali_nina Just FYI: In #Gajim 2.3.0, the statuses available are "Available", "Away", "Not Available", "Busy", "Offline", and a custom status message is also allowed. In #Conversations, in "Manage Accounts" -> tap the account -> tap the speech bubble in the upper right, with an exclamation mark -> one can set a custom Status Message. #XMPP #OpenSource

@aral The sad truth is that they know how to drive at the KPIs, even at the expense of others that they abuse, so they'll always be favored from a sheerly financial point of view. Alas, there's no magic wand that can be waved to remove how good they are at gaming the system, to (toxically) drive at KPIs. They can't be trusted on a level of close friendship, but they can be expected to be what a profit-maximizing system would call a "winner"

@stux quick, promote the person that designed that. Then they can escape all consequences, thereby securing the design's perfection.

@Stomata I see your frustration, but there is no perfect all-around solution at present. There's some missing important thing no matter which way you turn

@foone agree. Basic administrative sanity has its unshakable place. I prefer nginx to apache, but have deployed apache plenty of times in the past, and it's very decent as well.

@ricci I'd laugh if it weren't the case that I've actually been fired for practicing Good Science, but the good science was not visible to (and therefore appreciated by) the business types who controlled my paycheck. It's a funny joke until you're fired from a lack of visibility.

Which #OpenSource #decentralized, group #chat which supports E2E (end-to-end) #encryption is best? #infosec#fediverse #Matrix #XMPP #Deltachat #privacy #security #OMEMO

@Gustodon Just FYI: Both #Deltachat and #Signal let you copy and paste a link leading to your user accounts there, just saying. Such a link could be offered to Aunt Bess in #Facebook Messenger, #WhatsApp, etc. Lots of people have never found or tried these link-to-account features, and arguably should

@delta I agree, #Deltachat is awesome for superfast account creation, then sharing the account by QR code. No password set or stored, no phone number or email given, no password manager grumbled about necessitating

@kaixin the GUI based disk management tools are so good these days... gparted, #Gnome Disks, #KDE Partition Manager. Were they not good enough for you?#Linux #OpenSource

@kaixin my approach is to start from the GUI tools, then work downwards to the CLI only as necessary. In case I might ever need to relate to a normie on the matter, who feels aversive to the CLI. Maybe there is a similarly a GUI tool in BSD? Like gparted? Or maybe an ncurses-based TUI tool?

I'm having fun learning #Python Textual. But I'm feeling indecisive as to what I'll use it for. I have a nerd desire to make certain common Linux CLI operations more beautiful with a TUI. Think of how #RaspberryPi made "raspi-config"... Python Textual is even more beautiful than that, having theming, tooltips, and everything.My fellow #Linux nerds, what are some of your "pain points", where you use the Linux CLI, but wish you had a TUI interface, where none existed?#OpenSource #dev #DevOps #programming

@silo_bear I'm thinking of making a fun little **opinionated** backup/restore utility for #Kanboard, #Radicale, #Shiori, #Flarum, and #Prosody. I run all of these in a #SelfHosting environment.#OpenSource #Linux #DevOps
